..... dare I admit that I have Symantec and find it OK but obviously does not
find all the codswollop that ends up on the pc. FWIW I use Spybot, Adaware
and Spyware Doctor and do a run every third or fourth day to get rid of the
crap that gets thrown this way thanks to Broadband.

They are our primary (but not only) AV provider, and I have no
complaints. They seem to have not buggered up Ghost too much, but I
don't like much of their low-end consumer software much.

I haven't found a single spyware solution - different ones find
different things. PCSafe seems to do a reasonable job, if married to
a sensible set of browser settings.

I use Norton Antivirus and have always found it very good. I don't use any
of their 'Systemworks' so can't really comment on it.

Yes I am using Windows Firewall, I have to say...I like all the Microsoft
things on my PC as I know that they will, and do, all work well together
without causing problems. I know it was my fault for running whatever
program it was that caused the problem.

No, its the fault of your operating system that permits things that have
done it to run and contaminate your system. Who made that ? Oh yes.

I found Norton AV fine until I had a HDD problem that required a reformat,
thereby losing the licence number which NAV stashes away somewhere. I'd
even been clever and printed off the details when I downloaded it, but they
refused to work on Symantec's site.

So I emailed them - they said "contact Digital River" (which I took with a
large pinch of salt) so I contacted DR who said "licensing queries are
Symantec's problem" - I then emailed Symantec again and didn't even get a
reply.

By contrast, when I had some problem or other with F-prot, an email to them
on Friday brought a reply on Monday with an apology for an error at their
end and all was then well. That's the sort of service that mean's they get
my money, not Symnatec. I'm alos not impressed by the way Symantec seem to
be taking over everyone else - there's a Gates-esque feel to it - You want
software, you deal with us, style of thing.

Hmmm.

The only hiccough I had with Symantec was trying to pay them money for my
renewal - they didn't want to know :-( Eventually I realised that I was not
on the usa site not the uk ... a senior moment (gulp) but sorted it
immediately and am quite happy with it now.
I suppose we all have our favourites but I know wha'u'mean by the BillGates

Hi EMB.
When you wrote this...

I don't understand what you mean about copying over the original file. I
opened it in notepad but couldn't save it! I didn't delete anything because
the Spybot program blocked everything but the 'localhost 127.0.0.1'
Could you possibly explain how to do this manually...if you get time? No
rush 'cos all seems fine now.
Thanks again.

Or perhaps that the everyday user is a system administrator, rather
than a restricted rights user. Probably the most common error in
Windows installs - sacrifice security for convenience.

Would you believe it? Almost a full 24hrs after repairing my PC from its
Spyware/hosts problem the boot drive fails! £65 and almost 12hrs later I'm
back on the net with loads of anti-this and block-that software installed.
I like my PC, I quite enjoy fixing my PC...and it can go tits up a lot!
I'm seeing a similarity with PC's and Land Rovers here!!!
