I won't pretend to be anything like an expert on all the different map
reference protocols. Is there a good site anywhere,

Also any tools for converting say from Longditudte etc to OS references.

I have just been messing about with my Garmin Etrex gps system and I can put
in lat and long refrences and ,by switching the grid get OS refs out of it,
if that is of any use.

I might have some code (probably C++) that could do the conversion. It
might also be available in VB6. If interested, I'll have a look to
see what I have.

Microsoft's MapPoint product can also do the conversion.

If you're looking at doing the conversion yourself, there's the gotcha
that most GPS systems use the WGS 84 geoid for longitude/latitude,
whilst Ordnance Survey use Airy '36 (iirc) for the national grid.

(WGS 84 is a better global fit, whilst Airy is historical for the OS
and a better local fit for the UK).

Yes much of my day job is maps and GIS...

Have you tried the Ordnance Survey site?
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk
and more specifically:
http://www.gps.gov.uk/guidecontents.asp

> Also any tools for converting say from Longditude etc to OS references.

There's an on-line convertor here:
http://www.gps.gov.uk/convert.asp (but it looks like an IE-only page!)
Register here first:
http://www.gps.gov.uk/login.asp

If you want something for your own PC try here:
http://www.qgsl.com/software/gridiq.php
http://www.qgsl.com/software/download.php (Grid InQuest)
Registration required and there are likely to be some restrictions on
use for non-personal purposes. Link was found via the OS GPS site.
