not with most starter motors - only the permanent magnet type motors go
backwards. Starters are the other sort (series wound, maybe?) where the
electromagnets are in both the armature and the casing.

Oh the old magneto on my lambretta scooter, 6 volt and what need of
batteries. As you went round a corner and the lights dimmed with the engine
revs:)

Incedentally can one push start a diesel ?

If you push start your engine or use the starting handle, then you can
charge the battery back up

Definitely can with all my ancient examples, may be a problem with a
modern ecu controlled one.

anything with a solenoid fuel shut-off will not work with a dead-flat
battery... 'course, really old ones have a knob to pull to shut 'em off,
linked by cable to the pump.
