Thought as much! I've been asked to spend a day in a local comp next month.
My job is training people in a call centre, and the "Head of Motivation" at
the school (you couldn't make it up) has asked for someone to go in for a
day and give year 11 an idea of what the work is like, what skills they
need, etc. I'm the obvious candidate. I'm quite looking forward to it.

Not in private education but they both work in 'Public Schools'

In Scotland that's the (probably now outdated) description used for Primary
School.

As to the PC bit? I'm too old to care! Headmaster is a headmaster and a
Headmistress is a headmistress - I was always more afraid of the latter ;-))

Another steam fan here too. Only with me it's mostly boats. I've worked
President & Kildare (steam narrowboat & unpowered butty) and a friend
owns a steam powered icebreaker, Laplander. I've an interest in all
steam engines though, from the big pumping and mill engines down to
model ones. I've a yen to get one of the Hornby live steam model
railways or at least a Mamod traction engine one of these days (lack of
tuits)

So you're just a young rabbit then Austin. I was almost finished with
primary school by the time you arrived.

Summat like that - I play with steam trains in any spare time left after
working and keeping the green oval fleet running.

That's the one. They had a couple of them running on their stand at the
Goodwood Festival of Speed last year. Most impressive, even got a proper
set of controls!

I'm almost faulty.

April the first, as I believe I may have mentioned. Anyone in reach of
midsouthwest wales on the appropriate day ('s a saturday) is welcome to come
to the pub to help celebrate.

yes, currently trying to convince swmbo that we need at least a OO
live steam setup in the garden, although I would prefer G Scale....

That was it! "Head of Mentoring and Motivation". I'd forgotten the other M
word. I'm afraid I burst out laughing when I saw the letter my boss got.
She wasn't pleased - something about "attitude".

When I was teaching, there were heads of department (which was me), heads of
year, deputies and headteachers, and a careers bloke. Now they all sound
like their job titles come from the Social Work pages of the Grauniad.

People sometimes ask me what _I_ do - my usual replies are that I
work as a consultant for the Central Office of Disinformation and
that should I inadvertently provide further details of my current
projects I'd also be obliged to kill you.

Also note that I'm a reseller for http://www.despair.com/

Yes, those are the ones that are telling the kids that they are too
good for any kind of manual work and should all enroll for higher
education courses to enable them to gain as much debt, and as little
experiance of any practical kind as possible. Seems like your head of
motivation isn't managing to motivate the teachers in a very positive
way.... ;-)

Yep, we have some kids who are being entered for 11 GCSE's, in a
school which has the pupils that do not pass the 11+, as our area
still has Grammar schools. Kids that are struggling with 5 are
completely overloaded with 11, but whose fault is it......

try a school with 21 admin staff and 44 teachers..... One of them is
employed 8hrs a day, 5 days a week to scan the registers, which are
now done using optical mark readers. Takes about 20 minutes to do the
whole school.......
