Hi all!

Bought my first land rover a few months back and I've just realised I don't have a jack. I have a k reg defender 90 with the tubular jack points but my question is...should I be looking for a secondhand original (which I understand to be rather huge) or should I be opting for something like a bottle jack (and if so what would I use as jack points?). I have done a search on here but it's left me unsure whether there is an nhs rent reason why I shouldn't go for the original one. Price/functionality/convenience/availability?

Do most people have two (a small bottle jack for on board and a big 'un for in the garage, or do you need different types for different jobs?

Any feedback appreciated.

Den.

the standard 2 stage bottle jack is all you really need , a trolley jack (large 3 ton at least type ) is handy for speed of use when working on landy rather than lugging around JMHO

Mine still has the original Jack, which i once had a go at using, just to see how easy it was. It took bloody ages to jack up. So i carry around a bottle Jack also.

I tend to use use the ends of the axles as jacking points. Right under the trailing arm mounts on the back, and the wheel hub thngs (forget what they're called) on the front. Basically the lowest part. The bottle jacks don't go that high, so there aren't many places to Jack from. Also, you might think about something to spread the weight also. Bottle jacks are good on a solid surface, but I'd imagine that if you tried to jack it in a field, you'd just push the jack into the ground.

can also be used to rip off body parts (on vechicles and people) also can propel vehicles in a sideways direction at breakneck speed

For roadside plenty of second hand discovery 2 stage bottle jacks on ebay (you need 2 stage one for the axle height)

Really emergency use only - axle stands and decent hi lift trolley jack needed for at home;)

Sorry. Now I'm really confused. This doesn't look like a bottle jack (not what I had in my head anyway). And I can't see anything resembling a cap?? Am I being particularly dim?

With out wanting to appear rude, are you blonde or grey?
Picture is a hi lift or sometimes called farm jack. Stick to a good bottle jack look at machine mart / screw fix everyone sells them. If you have some spare cash get a trolley jack for home use.

I have the halfords but I am dubious as to whether it will actually lift my utility 110 - pretty sure it's going to be 2.2 Ton +

The trolly jack only lifts part of your landy up not the whole thing so 2 ton is plenty. I use a Clarke 2 ton trolley jack on my 110 CSW and I have a discovery bottle jack that sits in the box under the drivers seat

Bottle jack in tool box in back of 90 with hi lift, trolley in garage. As for jacking points chassis or axles.

The first time i tried out my bottle Jack i used the chassis as the jacking point. The jack promptly punched a hole through the chassis.:eek:

I spent the next four days under my landy with the welder as the mot was due that week.

When I got my 'fender I checked it at work and put the jacking beam under the chassis, I found out that section had been plated with 1.6mm steel:eek: needless to say I am due a weekend on the welder with it soon!!

So you had a result, if you didn't jack up on the chassis it would have failed the MOT.
