Bah! td5 110 csw 7.00 M5 Taunton 60mph .... pop, brrrr brrrr brrrrr - at least hid under a bridge to get family out of the rain! No drive at all, just grumbly buzzing noises from the rear diff. Relay home - good service from the AA, but still 3.30 am when we got in.

Can get drive with diff locked (tho wouldn't have driven home like that with diff likely to lock up any moment), with a few sound effects from the diff, but I'd guess there is little more damage to be done.

Gentle drive to local independent and enquiries made to a recommended source on here for either a recon or rebuild my own - we'll see what is left inside tomorrow I guess......... I assume if the crown wheel is gone it could be a waste of time?

That's life - I just expected some warning? It's had pretty bad backlash since new, and got a bit worse lately to the point I was looking around at recons anyway. Had a small rumble on overrun last week or so, but didn't rate it as serious, could have even been a bearing as far as I had thought about it.

See what tomorrow brings...... Thought I'd get it off my chest!! A

If your lucky it may only be a half shaft, or are you sure its the diff ?

after something similer happened to me it was a halfshaft and they are fairly cheap

(wow - multiquotes, didn't know you could do that!)

That's cheering guys thanks ...... 'my man' is having a squint from the hubs inwards, so fingers crossed he doesn't get past the members. It seemed a very central sound effect, but these noises do carry strangely around the metalwork sometimes I suppose.

I guess because I was fretting about the backlash recently I assumed this was it. I've been under there a lot doing uj's and brake drum/seal. Here's hoping - though I'm tempted to get the diff done to get some confidence for a few more years.....hmmmmmm....

Will let you know. Cheers, A

Well..... great news, all fixed and from the short text message was half shaft and bearings and 'seals, some missing'...... hmmmmm? So well diagnosed folks.

Bad news was work went ahead without any prior discussion and appears to be a small mortgage worth....... will get the full story before going off the deep end (maybe the seals/bearings were in the diff...?) , but spoilt an otherwise good evening...... Thanks for the support - will fill in the gaps when I find out - local guy with good rep, so gets the benefit of any doubt for sure. Cheers, A

ahh, but what did you tell the garage, theres a contractual difference between "can you fix this" and "can you tell me whats wrong with this"

although tbh, most of the labour would be in the strip to find outs whats wrong, changing the seals aint a hard job once its apart, so labour would have been the same to put it back together broken.

Had a diff lock up on me [going hard off road][diff well busted] so removed prop and drive flange bolts, some oil splatter about but drove home about 35 miles.

I'd have been tempted but with wife and 3 kids and for 140 miles....... ??? And as it was half shaft prob as well I avoided any diff damage. Cheers, A

'See what you find and then we'll decide what to do' seems fairly clear.....

Not spoken yet so all might make sense ...... A

Well, got the old girl back and running like a dream, much quieter and no rumbles on the overrun as were starting, so very pleased - and ironed out the backlash a lot too, unsurprisingly with half shaft splines rattling around about to let go.......

The bill shows r and l half shafts, drive members + bolts, wheel bearings and oil seals each side and replaced a missing hub bearing spacer on one side (I'd guess from a different garage doing a 'welded' bearing to stub axle several years ago - twas not me guv!)....

I feel she has been well checked out, and the work done very well, still not sure £500 + vat is bang on (6 hours labour?), but I couldn't get near it myself, and if there is a 'gold plated' hour or so on there it was time well spent doing it carefully..... Onwards and upwards and a good investment in keeping her smooth for a lot longer!

Cheers, A
