to attach a hitch to the rear before crossing an unknown ford?

Possibly, but to get out, use the handy footbridge and properly assess it first to decide what's needed or to say no early doors, rather than trying the assessment from the drivers seat!

Or to let someone else go first .. ;)

I know I did wrong, and understand I did wrong and as such was a bit of a twunt on this occasion, it won't happen again .. and I don't need sermons .. But I can also see that a long distance, remote analysis of how wrong I was could be useful to others.

what on a tarmaced public road? why would you? especially when , as they say they had crossed the same river several times during the day.
Ive just got home from spending a couple of hours with Paul and Juliet and it sounds as though the crossing in question had a culvert that could have been washed away.
on fords that are prone to flooding it is usual to see a marker board indicating actual water levels, as this one didnt have one, you would assume it doesnt suffer extreme levels.
On unsurfaced roads you would always check levels and terrain on water crossings

Glad you are feeling better Paul. Cant believe this happened to you, I have always felt safe following you laning, it just shows stuff can happen to anyone.

On the plus side, it will have washed all that revolting sticky mud from the North Yorkshire forest out of it :)

Good on you for putting your hands up and saying you fooked up but it's something that can happen to any of us so no sermons.....but it does make it easier for us to learn from your mishap.

Water esp flowing water can be treacherous even on routes we know, even from the footbridge you might not have been able to see a washout, and a washout changes the game completely.

Might have been worth a look though the bottom line is chance always plays a hand....all we can do is give chance some thought and plan for the unexpected as far as is practical.

So glad I didn't see you go down mate :5bwilly_nilly: And thank fook you came back up!

I think perhaps Pauls experience today would suggest a trailing tow line for first vehicle across makes sense if there's any doubt at all.

My suggestion not so silly then earlier, thought that might have been considered stupid as I was writing it

Sorry, I'd missed that, saw Dafts and was replying to TC.

I'd never consider something was stupid because it was posted by you.....unless it's about accrued interest on owed cake where you have some deranged ideas :p

Depends, might it also have simply dragged another vehicle into the river too?

Might it not, when the Landrover spun round, have contributed to it rolling over and making a bad situation worse?

No worries, I'm happy I did it almost right, (also known as wrong before anyone says) considering we'd crossed the same river on a green lane ford earlier and that this was a 'proper' ford on a 'proper' road .. but simply without depth markers, possibly suggesting it wasn't _that_ deep.

My real mistake was not saying no early enough and getting caught out.

Just cos I found a bottomless puddle didn't mean it was a gauntlet challenge to find deeper you know moi lurvelee ;) :p
Tsk the lengths you boys go to to out do a bird I dunno :D

Very true. On the bright side it appears from descriptions given that the Disco is right side up, making recovery easier, and less damage....or is it no longer visible? Is someone monitoring its position lest the river floods more and moves it?

Sounds like it'd be tricky to get a line on it to anchor to the bank....not sure what else could be done really :(

In future Paul going to church is a lot less hassle O Brother, Where Art Thou Soundtrack - 04 - Down To The River To Pray (+lyrics) - YouTube
