hi
my defender 90 200tdi recently had a new turbo(after the last one had a runaway) and had the headgasket replaced, now its all been put back together the car wont move unless you rev the nuts off it and it'll only crawl or stall,
any ideas what could be the problem?
thanks

When the head was off did you try turning the engine over by hand? Runaways generally damage quite a few bits depending on the rpm achieved and for how long and whether all the oil was burnt. Could be bent rods, pistons seized in the cylinders or big end / main bearing / cam bearing seized if it is stiff to turn by hand. Timing could also have jumped a tooth or two.

Yes, turned it over by hand when head was off, all seemed fine. When the runaway happenes i managed to stall it before it went bang.
And there is an unusual amount of white smoke, it idles fine but if you put your foot down there will be a cloud of white smoke

If you have white smoke you need to check all the basics first, check the timing (not just the FIP but also the cam which is a front cover off job), once that is correct check the valve clearances and then do a compression check.

Sounds like a timing/fuel issue, are all the injectors seated correctly? Any air in the fuel?

The injectors are held in by brackets are they not? A visual will tell you, are there any wet spots around the injectors?
Put a clear drain off pipe across the injectors, you will see air bubbles if there is air in the fuel system, I always have a section of clear pipe in the drain off.
Did you check the injectors to make sure they were working correctly?

The injectors were seated correctly and werent leaking, i'll get some clear drain pipe, and try that. I didnt test the injectors, do i just take the injector and turn the engine over to see if fuel comes out?

Pretty much but I cant be sure on a TDI.
See it sounds like fuel starvation to me, is everything connected up correctly on the turbo? I doubt anything is seized in the engine as it idles Ok but when it calls for fuel (rev it) it doesn't seem to be getting any. Any broken vacuum hoses or something along those lines? Any holes or cracks in the inlet manifold? My old bus was well down on power and had white smoke when revved, turned out to be a hole in the inlet manifold where a bolt holding a bracket had come loose.

Aye, turbos connected up properly, i'll check all hoses, pipes and manifold aswell tomorrow and i'll see how i get on and report back,
cheers
