Having just changed the VCU and rear diff mountings I've now discovered the car is only driving from the offside front. I managed to 'borrow' a car lift to check a niggling noise after I changed the VCU and noticed immediately the nearside front has no drive to the wheel.

I'm about to dismantle my 'spares' Freelander to see how easy it may be to change shafts, however...

I've had the last two weekends under the car, but I have a limit. Gotta leave some time to crawl under the Disco too :)

Anyone else had this, and is it (I think yes) likely to be an IRD problem?

Easy? Really? I thought it was remove the old diff and buy a new/recon and refit?

I guess driving it as it is will simply bugger whats ledt, including the new VCU...

best to do it quick then

maybe if you drop the prop and VCU you can run on 1 wheel drive for a bit......???

Am I being completely thick?? Is it the differential working as it should? ie. if I were to put some resistance against the front wheel that IS moving then maybe the diff takes over and puts drive to the other wheel?

I'm confused?

Its entirely possible that its fine. Get it up on blocks or axle stands, start it up, put it in first gear and see what turns. If you (CAREFULLY - use the sole of your shoe on the tyre and watch it doesnt snatch your foot) slow down and stop the front wheel that turns, the other side is pretty likely to spin up. Remember that open diffs send the power to the side with the least grip, so a very slightly binding brake is easily enough to stop that wheel turning and the other side will receive all the power.

Having contacted Bell engineering and his other supplier, Freelander Specialists, they both replied that this is normal for the Freelander!!

Quite bizzarre!,

It's just a diff working! If you stopped the spinning wheel the other side would spin! That's normal for an open diff
