Range Rover 3.9 - runs as good as ever - 130,000 miles.

Slight tappet rattle if it's been standing for a week, otherwise the
engine is sounding OK.

Apart from this new rattle that's just started. It's not at engine
speed (or half engine speed) - it's a light rattle, that sort of goes
'Rattle-rattle- - - -rattle--- rattle rattle--- -- -rattle' not
consistant, or constant, but intermittant - if you see what I mean.

Now it's coming from the front of the engine - not yet tracked it down,
but it's either the power steering pump, the fan or the distributor...
Or something else in that area.

Which one would you plump for? Is this a common fault? HELP!

Water pump bearings on the way out?

Possible - although it's a newish pump and not leaking (that I can
see)... Be nice if it was - deep down I suspect it's something terrible
and expensive - I just don't know what.

Had the same sort of very light rattle from the front of my 3.9 recently,
not haevy mechaincal knock, but an annoying light rattle, found a few of the
belts needed tightening, did this and the rattle ha stopped, however, i
think this may have have taken up the slack in a bearing that may be on the
way out??????

I think my next port of call has to be to take off the belts and see if
the noise goes away - then I'll know if it's something on the front or
not...

Beware! I had a light rattle from the front of my 2.5 n/a diesel that
started when I tightened the alternator belt and went away when I
slackened it. Turned out to be a loose crankshaft pulley, and I only
just escaped having to replace the whole crank. I would investigate,
for peace of mind.

Does it rattle when at a stand still? The water pump on our Discovery does
the same.

We just got one in at work with the same problem, definitely worth checking
for.

Yes - but only with the engine running...

Seems to be tight - somewhat distracted tongith by someone taking off
the drivers door mirror while it was parked - must have hit it hard as
it smashed a bloody big dent in the door too...

Of course they didn't bother to leave their details.

Trying to score a door and mirror on Ebay :-(

had this same rattle noise on my 110 once, it turned out it was the PAS
pump. Disconnect PAS belt to prove.

*Ding* Man wins any prize from the top shelf.

It's the fecking pump - not leaking at all, but the pully can be moved
in and out about 5 mm. Bugger.

Can I have the cuddly badger please?
FWIW, once I'd found out what it was, I carried a spare pump in the back for
nearly 2 years. Then I tidied it out and left the new pump in the garage.
It's still there, the old one still occasionally makes a bit of noise, I
still ignore it! It has the same movement, BTW.

That makes me feel a bit better - I'll probably change it anyway at
some point soon.
