Oily rear brakes!

I decided to investigate my brakes as there was a bit of leakage from the rear wheels. I thought it would be the cylinders so I got a seal kit, but when I whipped the drums off it's blatantly oil not brake fluid

It's a '83 88 I have, the shafts are 24 spline now I've had a look, with the circlip not the cotter pin / castle nut in the Haynes book of ****e. Can anyone tell me what the crack is with the seals, I assume it's oil from the diff getting into the drums?

Check for a blocked breather which can allow oil to be forced past the seals. Otherwise it's a new pair of seals, a couple of quid each and an hour or so of work.

Off the top of my head and several beers later

jack up,remove wheel and use axle stand.

ring of bolts round half shaft drive flange-withdraw half shaft.

you will now see wheel bearing lock nut and locking washer-tap locking washer back and release nut- remove nut and locking washer.

(preferably use socket, but a sharp chisel and hammer common to tap nut undone)

remove wheel bearing adjustment nut,bearing inner race etc,etc

remove hub and prise out seal

grease inner lip of seal and refit tapping evenly with hammer or suitable drift that won't damage seal

clean clag off where flange bolts on and use brake cleaner to degrease.

refit hub,bearing and drum
the first nut is adjustment and should take out play, nip up to pull everything in and back off and adjust up till no play ***but not be wound up tight with socket***.

fit new locking washer and tighten lock nut up-peen edges over to lock nuts

-fit new gasket and or use instant gasket on half shaft flange faces-refit bolts

refit wheel and top up diff
