Hello,

I would really appreciate a bit of guidance... Gearbox removal or engine out?

I need to replace the main crank seals (I think???) as I the much loved old dog (series 2a) trick of marking the ground as he went, has become a geriatric problem of serious incontinence! It is hurling the black stuff everywhere, and gushing from the drain hole on the bellhousing/clutch assembly.

So which end do I start, is it less hassle to lift the engine or remove the box and drives to get at it? I have a pit and an engine lift... I am just short of some enthusiasm and encouragement to begin what looks like a lot of sore knuckles and sweat. I am a great believer in finding the easier option if there is one? (By the way special landrover oil leak stopper at £15 a pot is useless... but it did silence some of the rattles in the series 3 diesel engine that seems to be the source of the problem). Many thanks for any help, advice or sympathy.

Never done the job, but I gather it is six of one and half a dozen of the other BUT

I believe you haver to drop the sump to do the job, so you have to support the engine off the ground/bench some how, so will it be easier still on the mountings in the vehicle?

Thanks for this Davec. I will give it a bit more thought, I have got to do the UJ on the rear propshaft anyway, so I am inclined to start at the back, then end up in the middle. I just wondered how much room there was to be battering out the 40 year old seals under the beast? I gather from Haynes that the seats and handbrake need to be removed which ever way you go. The old truck has just passed the MOT, despite the fact that the VIN number was removed when the chassis was replaced, and it seems a shame to pull it to bits when it is actually legal and tax exempt to spew oil over Tesco's car park.

If it really is 50/50.... I should perhaps just make a start and do my bit for global warming and cutting back oil consumption.

Many thanks,

Oilslick (For a bit longer....but considering reform!)
