hi guys i have a 2005 3.0td6 154000 miles on her i have always used castrol 5-30w oil.. its been for a plug in at a local land rover specialist (first time). and they said they belive it should be running on 5-40w made by morris oils... they dont stock it so dont think they trying to up sell... but after looking at morris web site it says the same i have had no problems with castrol but is it worth the change if its going to help long term???? any idea's? or what you guys running on cheers

Have a look in the front of the rave manual, I don’t think the tractor engines are as fussy as the 4.4 M62 with the 1000 miles of tiny oil ways and the cylinder bores made out of ‘don’t even look at me funny or I’ll blow up aluminium’
I think the td6 engine is robust , it’s just the transmission that is made out of lilly livers :)
If you want to cross reference with the BMW sites it is the M54 engine if you didn’t know already.

thanks for that mate i have looked at the RAVE and it is not clear on what to use.. niether is the hand book...as daft as that sounds... i know bits about oil etc but not sure changing to il that can deal with the extra 10.C is worth it lolo_O

Where do you get an extra 10C from ?

The owners manual in one version I have of Rave . which is for this engine. Owners handbook page 237.

Cheers

The brand is not important, the manual shows 5W30 or 5W40 depending on operating temperature, it also shows other grades as suitable. I'd stick with the Castrol.
In my M51 I use 5W40 Shell Helix or Total depending on which one is on promotion.

I would think 10W40 would be best for British climate. ;)

I used shell helix ultra in my 4.4 petrol, I think 5w-40.
I would lean to 5w or 10W -40 on a higher mileage TD6 engine although I’m not entirely sure why.
As above, if you don’t have any issues and you are not using excessive oil I wouldn’t worry too much.
I have never used Castrol but have read many good things about it on various forums.
I think Castrol and Mobil have an oil recommendation / selection app on their websites where you put in your Reg and it gives you a recommendation.
You could probably run the TD6 on pi$$ and chip fat and it would still outlive us all.:)
