oil type help

i need to know the correct engine oil type and grade to use in my freelander it's a 2000 td4 , is it 0w-30 5w-30 10w-40 ,semi sythetic or fully sythetic oil , a diesel only oil or just engine oil for petrol or diesel

if you can help im so confused

10/40 semi syn is norm

I may use 5/40 next time as the wife does regular short runs

5/40 slightly thinner when cold helps lube from cold starts

Dont worry about make if your happy to change every 3 - 5k miles

We generally do about 10-11k per yr in our TD4. Is it worth changing our oil every 6 months or leaving it for the yr!!!! I have just had to have a new engine fitted in mine, even tho its only 3 yrs old !!!!!! broken crankshaft and I will do what I can to prevent that again -
What about places like Kwik Fit or National Tyres etx who do these oil changes

Fully synthetic 5w/40 for our climate, 5w/30 for cold climate

I think it is important to change the oil every 5000 miles, as this will ensure that your engine stays well lubed. Check the level every week to make sure its not burning excessive amounts.whilst your there do the coolant too! On average its acceptable to burn 0.5 litre every 5000 miles, any more and i would be concerned ish! 0.5 litre is half of the dipstick mark Low / Full.
As for what oil to use, your handbook should give you the specifications, or check at your local Halfords.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO KWIK FIT OR NATIONAL TYRES THEY ARE MICKEY MOUSE COMPANIES THAT EMPLOY POORLY TRAINED FITTERS WHO TRY TO RIP YOU OFF. I work for a Daihatsu dealer and Skoda specialist garage in the service and parts department, a customer of ours had a service and we advised he needed 2 new front tyres so he took it down to Kwik fit to get it done. As "part of the service" they give your vehicle a check over for you, they advised him that it needed new brakes all round ( discs and pads ) and also that the cambelt was due for replacement. The customer then phoned us, a bit ****ed off that we had missed all this important stuff so we told him to come back and we'll check it again. There was nothing wrong with the discs or pads and the cambelt wasn't due for another 20000miles or 1 year whichever comes first. Beware, this nearly cost our customer about £500 so avoid these places like the plague.
With regards to oil, my friend has a TD4 freelander serviced at LR they use fully synthetic 5w/40 with a flush each time and goes the full 12000miles it still sounds like new at 36000 miles. Always use engine flush before dropping the oil out and it will make your new oil last a lot longer, Welcome to Forté Lubricants do the best one, this one is also good http://www.wurth.co.uk/catalogue/pdfs/UK-CD_06_0315.pdf. Try and look for a decent independent or LR specialist, you do get what you pay for with servicing, insist on a copy of the service schedule checklist that they should have worked from. There are a lot of things that need to be checked and renewed on a LR that most garages dont know about, do not take it to Fred in the shed as all you will get is an oil change and a brake check.
