I have a 200tdi disco converted engine in my defender which runs fine, but recently just noticed a puddle of oil under the car. it appears that the oil leak is dripping out of the downpipe exhaust joint! how can I have oil leaking out of my exhaust?? if so whats causing it. it otherwise drives and runs fine! and it only happens when engine running. but not sure but may stop leaking after a while? Any help much appriciated!!

As Blue Beasty says, check it out before it comes to this! Runaway Diesel Defender 200 TDI - YouTube

oh sh1t, that is not good, bet its even more heartbreaking to watch for real!

so hows this caused? does the lack of waste gate pressure force the fuel pump to keep pouring more fuel into the engine?

cos i know theres a pipe from the waste gate of the turbo to the fuel pump on the 200TDI, but never understood why.

so how do you kill a runaway?

Shove a rag in the intake?

Id **** me self if that happened to me! id kinda like to know how to stop it.

Oh so am I looking at a new turbo then? or at least a good second had one. Anyone know where I can get a decent secondhand turbo for 200tdi? it's still running to well so dont think its head gasket. Thanks for help.

You can get a runaway by putting too much oil in the engine

Check this video :suspicious:

I wouldn't like to be anywhere near that, but if possible either a rag, or charge a CO2 extinguisher in the intake, no oxygen, no combustion... in theory

If you want a new turbo, best bet is to shop around, get a few prices, sorry to say but they are expensive if new, probably £500 plus :( You might be able to find a second hand one off Fleabay for around £200 :)

The o ring on my dipstick tube disappeared a while back and it spewed oil onto the down pipe - worth checking. I would have thought a gas tight exhaust seal would also keep oil in if it was from the turbo?

I just checked, and on the green handle on my dipstick, it has the 'O' ring in place, is that all it has to seal it? or should there be something else?

I had oil dripping down the downpipe after the engine had been running, area underneath turbo was covered in an oily mess but it was caused by a leaking turbo oil-feed - from the banjo on top of the turbo. Someone previously had put both copper sealing washers on the same side of the banjo bolt, I took it off and put one either side and no more leaking. :)
