Oil Light

Can anybody suggest anything, my DiscoTD5's oil light has started to flash very intermitently, and very quickly goes on and off while driving along - i have checked the level, that is fine, if anything a fraction to much, but only a mill or two on the dipstick.

Could be the wiring to the oil pressure sensor has chaffed and is shorting to something ...

OR

Could be the oil pressure sender is faulty, or you have a sticking oil pressure release valve, or the oil pump is on its way out.
Dont ignore it as the TD5 will destroy itself in very short time with little or no oil pressure. Go on and ask me how I know. My engine went bang within 30 seconds of the oil light coming on at 65mph. Not even enough time to dip the clutch and pull over.

Only way to be sure is to fit an oil pressure gauge and watch it like a hawk. If its the pump then you need to drop the sump to change or service it.

Assuming you meant engine pressure oil light and not transmission temp oil light, I'd look first at the oil pressure switch connector and harness.

Oil pressure switch is located in the back of the oil cooler, down below the exhaust manifold between cyls 4 & 5.

The connector has only one conductor (switch closes to earth when engine oil pressure goes below 0.6 bar, illuminating the corresponding dash light) that goes around the back of the engine on top of the bell case and joins the engine harness right in front of the fuel pressure regulator. Said conductor runs in a 1/4" slit convoluted tubing and is often prone to damage through chaffing (has also a tendency to get pulled apart when removing the bell case).

Secondly a faulty oil pressure switch (p/n NUC10003, should be about £6).

Thirdly an actual engine oil pressure prob... well Shifty's reply just came in as I was writing so need to say no more.

Thanks both it gives me something to go on. In the meantime i have a L/R specialist in Telford, not to far from me, looking at it tomorrow , will let you know how i get on.
