Hi

My Disco 4 has recently had an health check during a service at a Main Land Rover dealership and they have reported that my vehicle has 3 oil leaks. The leaks include front and rear timing cover seals and the rear main. Unfortunately I had a dispute with the dealer as I believed they damaged the wheel hubs while they were fitting new disks and I didn`t get a price from them to repair the leaks. I would be grateful if someone could let me know roughly what is involved to repair the leaks and an idea of costs. I have approached a local machanic and he said that the body may have to come off to fix oil leak on the rear main, he also said it would be difficult to give an estimate for the work.

Thanks in advance.

Is it actually a leak though? as dealers can be real anal and are always looking for work.
There are a few stages of so called leakage and not all need remedial action.

1, its damp so what, also called sweating, ie clean it off with brake cleaner and it will stay clean for ages.
2, its a minor leak and you can see the oil leak track but its not fresh oil ie running, so minor it does not make it to the road surface, clean it off and dont worry.
3, its actually dripping onto the road and making a mess of the underside of the car, that is a leak that needs fiixng.

Keep the oil just under maximum, they dont hold much so dont just gob it in the engine.

So buy a gallon of brake cleaner off of ebay etc, 12/15 quid delivered, give the slighlty warm but not hot engine engine a good clean off, basically pour/spray it all over concentrating at the rear of the heads and the v between the cylinder heads behind the oil filter cap and monitor it.
Do not use a hosepipe or any sort of pressure washer.

DO NOT SMOKE whilst applying the brake cleaner.

Thank you for the info Lynall. I have just checked the oil and it`s used 250 ml in 1100 miles. Theres no visible oil on the floor, just wet on the engine and gearbox in a few places. I will upload a few pics of the leaks.

This is the rear main leakView attachment 191888

Nowt to worry about governor, just clean and monitor the leak and the oil level as it may worsen but doubtful.
My D3 has a wet rear top and sides to the rear of the engine, none drips on the floor and its been like that for 4.5 years!
With suspension in off road height you can see some of the back of the engine looking through the wheel arches.

Madly you are allowed quite an oil leak and still get an mot pass, something like a 50mm dia circle of oil on the floor in 5 minutes is considered okay!
