Hi all.

After purchasing my 90 i noticed an oil leak. few drips on drive.

i have cleaned the sump and its dripping out of the sump plug. i have changed all filters and oil (was to do so anyway) and bought a new sump plug washer. - the guy in the shop gave me a copper and alloy one. the existing is just copper. i take it that i just need the copper one?

Also after cleaning the sump and bell housing i noticed the plug in the bell housing is 'weeping' oil also. this has an alloy washer. i have not removed it yet as i don't know were the top up is for the bell housing... or if its fed from the gearbox / engine.

Sorry if they are simple questions.

Its a Landrover, if there is no oil leaking out of it, there is no oil in it.....

I keep a bucket under mine......

funny. being my first its not something id consider 'normal'

I spent a good while tracking down all my leaks and old oil cooler hoses, leaky sumps etc etc on my disco 1 and then repairing them and mine still has a dribble now and again, its normal, really, they all do it, even the newer ones are known to have a little drop escape now and then.

this will either be your first of many or the last one you own, i think how you approach this little oil issue is going to be key, good luck

are you sure that isnt a wading plug thats been left in? i thought the bell housing was dry with a drain hole at the bottom, this is where the wading plug goes, i would stick a picture up of this plug and get the opinion of other deepender drivers on this, I is but a lowly tratter wannabe in my rot box disco;)

Yep, wading plug. I leave that one in all the time and just check every month for contamination. The front one I only fit when I need it as I have an oil leak in the housing and it gets a puddle of oily watery liquid which then runs straight to your armpit when you take it out!!

I was serious about the leaks, they are the nature of the beast and you won't stop them. You either learn to grin and bear it or get of owning one!!

Welcome to Landrovers!!

im not massivey fussed about the leaks, unless they are proper bad. I'm more concerned about my mates drives when i call round ;)

ill take the plug out and see whats behind it. might just be full of shat. maybe as part of my oil change and sump washer change it might stop. i don't think the loose oil filter would have helped.

thanks for the help everyone. :D:D

I took the wading plug out, no oil came out, just oil on the nut. Nut also had 2 washers on. Is this normal?

No but dont worry about it, its just a plug to keep water and crap out so doesn't really matter if its got 1 washer or 5.

Changed my sump plug twice and it still manages the occasional drip but luckily this is disguised by the f**king great puddle from my rear crank seal

I worked with a lad that called them pre drilled oil leaks !!

I thought it was just like my dog, marking its territory. My mates stopped complaining after they realised that I did not give a **** and they all enjoying mucking around in my landy so they forgive me for the mess I make. Oil leaks are just part of the ownership experience, I have come to like them actually for some reason.

its a constant renewal oils system, to reduce the need for frequent oil changes Land Rover have developed a system that enables the lubrication requirements to be constantly drained and thus allowing the user to refill with fresh lubricants on an almost daily basis.

Now stop moaning, if it aint leakin its empty.

Best rationale I've heard:D :hysterically_laughi:

I just rake over the gravel when it gets too bad!

I always thought it use to be if your series was leaking oil, you take it for a good drive on a gravel road and all the dust that clings to the oil leak stop it from becoming worse:D
