Well it happened tonight.....I got the car running perfectly, gears all ok and new battery. My missus went for a run of about 12 miles to asda and as she got back in the car and set off she drove about 2 miles and the M&S lights started flashing and then the check engine light came on. She pulled over straight away and as she went to switch the engine off she said there wasd a loud pop/bang and then lots and lots of smoke....As she got out the car with the engine switched off she said there was lots of smoke and oil dripping from just behind the number plate area.

I went along to recover it and sure enough directly below the rad there was a massive pool of oil and on opening the bonnet there is oil everywhere. It has hit the fan and sprayed everywhere but it is definately from the rad area.

What could this be? Could it be the gearbox oil cooler? Thats what I take it to be so far....

Is it going to be expensive.....I guess i'll start taking it to bits tommorrow...

so my 52 plate td5 hasn't got an automatic gearbox oil cooler????? Can I replace the engine oil cooler or do I need to replace the rad aswell....

Auto's have a oil cooler. thought yu was on about some old dog of 200/300tdi. This is why ya need to give plenty of info when yu post a question.

I have the discovery 2 workshop manual in pdf but it seems to be for the v8 d2 as it doesn't have the section for engine management systems-td5 but it does for the v8.....does anyone know where I can download it from so I can get stuck into trying to remove the intercooler and fixing my frickin car......:)

I wouldnt think its the cooler in the rad . I weld & pressure test these before they are put in the rads & have never seen one blow in 16 yrs .

well its not the oil cooler thats for sure. I have stripped the intercooler out and the cooler and pipes are fine but my intercooler pipes, egr replacement and inlet manifold are full of oil but I cant smell diesel in it although I do have the cold......

Sorry Martin but what makes you say turbo? Why would the oil be dripping out from the front of the engine?

I have looked at the turbo and it looks ok. There is no broken blades or axial float.....

ryanmac
you don,t need axial play or damaged blades for oil to pass through the turbo ???. it has oil seals that sounds like wats failed

Hi Martin
I have the same problem.....have to replace the engine oil cooler for my TD5, and cannot find the TD5 workshop service manual to get started. purchased a workshop service manual from tradebit this morning, but only V8 .....wrong manual they sent me. Can anybody pleeess help me get hold of a TD5 engine diagram, so I can see where the oilcooler is, and procedure for how to remove and replace the engine oilcooler?
