ive recently bought a series 3 with what looks like it could be an oil cooler infront of the raidiator but it not attached i was just wundering wether there are any advatages of having it attached back on to the engine or not?

It may just have the advantage of cooling the oil in the engine

if it is two bars bent in a u with sort of wiggly wires on them as sort of 'fins', then likely to be the standard fit on Military spec SIII's... they speced it for extreme climates I believe.
Adds a about a pint to oil capacity and keeps it a bit cooler....... not REALLY needed, but could be useful if you tweek the engine, want to go to Africa or have a clogged radiator!
Might be worth checking for other clues of military oragin though.......
What age is it?
Some demobbed ex-mils were reg'd on plates the year they were de-mobbed, rather than a plate for the year they were built...... theres a 'Genuine' tax exempt SII FFR 109 near me wearing an 'A' (1982!) registration plate, as that's when it was released from military service....

oil cooler ?, does it have an 8 blade fan ? if yes / yes, its ex mill, yer dunt need either in the uk ,more africa and the like, hot hot, or like yer said above good fer performance tuning and over heating thru blocked rads ! dunt bother connecting it in my opinion, unless yer need it . more agro yer could do with out , trust me.

Overcooled oil is not a good idea, as well as allowing f0r extremes of climate, many military Land Rovers were expected to run stationary for long periods to charge batteries, so the need for extra cooling.
