just had the oil changed ird diff and i thought gearbox(auto) but got a phone call they said that they had phoned land rover in salisbury they said dont touch it could end up with all sorts of probs so the garage declined to do the box that is no 5 that wont touch it:confused: so i phoned land rover meself and shore enough told me the same also said that the oil stays in for the life of the box but as most of you no haynes say change it every 60000 miles whos right land rover or haynes:mad:

Land Rover recommend the auto box oil to be changed at 60000 miles in their service sheets so don't know why they wont change it

They must have had dramas in the past

The only thing i can think of is maybe 60000 miles is too long for the oil and creates a lot of wear which then deposits itself inside the box due to the additiva package being used up. The fresh additive package in the new oil would then clean all these deposits and hold them in the oil which can then lead to box failures in both manuals and automatics.

If the oil comes out really clean then i cant think of why it would cause a failure

needs a special type of oil in those boxes
 
its been a pain in the arse trying to get the oil in the gbox changed like i said in my post took it to 5 garages as soon as i mention its auto they all run away think mine is due a change its done nearly 160000 an ive done 150000 of them :D
 
did read all that but havent got the facilities to do it my self (drive on a big slope) so i thought i would farm it out didnt realise it would be such a problem then lr said that so have just about given up imean if it aint broke dont fix it kind of thing
 
Hmmmmmmmm!! I know what you mean I spoke to an independent, and he said the same he won`t touch them, other than to top up, he will send it out to an auto box specialist. I suppose there is so much that can go wrong with one, and if they touch it, any subsequent faults could be down to them to fix?
 
Id agree with landrover, i changed the oil in me disco when i 1st got it and 5 weeks later it needed a new box.... if it aint broke dont fix it
 
hi there told the same in for life but the guy said usely changed on clutch renew so usely changed one or twice in freelanders life hope that helps
 
"in for life" really means in for the life of their warranty (3 years, 60K miles) after that they don`t give a monkeys as its you who will be paying big time if anything goes wrong...... I would never leave fluid in for that long in any car, whatever the manufacturer said.
 
The oil change on the LR service at 60k miles only replaces what falls out. This 42% of the oil in the auto. If they were that concerned, then they would have done something about it. Asked for a propper oil drain screw which removed more. Anyone know how other manufacturers get on with a simular version of the auto? Jag, Ford, Mazda, Nissan?
 
all i no is am ****ed off with been given the run around all i wonted was the oil changed didnt realise it was such a mine field rang otterns of salisbury and dunsfold lr at bath was told the same basically if it aint broke dont fix it.there rant over going for a beer:D
 
Am I right in saying that the new landrovers dont use this 402 oil any more, so is now obsolete?

Thats what a Landrover dealer told me anyway, the new ones must use something else?

Yes its an auto and yes the right fluid was used, it started off taking a while from cold to change fron 1st gear upwards this happend for a couple of weeks then it just failed on the m'way
 
Sounds a bit like doing the brake fluid. Never let the system empty as there are pockets in the brake modulator that if filled with air you can't get out again without using specialist kit.

Here Tincan, I gather you've tried Joyces in Trowbridge.

Aisin Warner - Similar to Jatco - only half drains out.

With regard the sealed for life aspect (which I support) the only people who have the answer is Jatco.
