Bought this (my fifth over the years) 110sw in November (genuine 48000 miles!) complete with various receipts for bits and pieces done in last 6 months. One was a full service just a few weeks prior to sale.
Well I took this at face value, reputable garage etc.
So today took a half day to myself and decided to service it as my standard 6 months is up. My opinion is that said reputable garage lied through their teeth!! The fuel filter, which I thought was leaking at the seal, was actually seeping through the metal and the oil, which I check regularly, though admittedly just by a quick glance at the dipstick to check the level, was so thin I think I've ****ed thicker.
Anyway, rather than reach for the agri oil I used in my old 300tdi I headed for eurocarparts and their May sale and splashed out big time on 8 litres Castrol Edge Titanium FSX or something for £60.
So a short time later with new Mann fuel filter and new "fancy" oil and Mann oil filter fitted I headed off to work.
Well b****r me. Never have I changed oil and had such a hugely noticeable difference!! I was utterly amazed. The beast is so much quieter, smoother and with nary a bit of engine rattle and the temp guage which always sat at bang on halfway is now, despite the 25 degree weather, resting comfortably at one third.
Is it the "fancy" oil?? Dunno but I'll not be using anything else now.
I've done regular oil changes on all my landys over the years some less regular oops but never have I noticed such an instant change.
Anyone else had this? Is it the "fancy" oil? Is it just that the old oil was so bad that anything would have done the same?
Don't really mind what you say coz I'm sticking with the "fancy" oil from now on.

What engine?

Cheers

Yes, I've serviced one or two which have been professionally serviced over the years and found no evidence that anything had been changed. Fuel filters that are deeply pitted with rust in a way that hasn't happened overnight, that sort of thing. You should see some of the ancient sludge that comes out of gearboxes and axles in vehicles with a fully stamped book too.

I dunno if expensive oil is necessarily better than cheaper stuff, but the consensus on here is that changing it regularly is the most important thing.

That's why we call 'em stealers ...

How many miles since the last oil change ? and what was the oil filter condition?
I bought it with 48800 (approx) on it and had been serviced 3 weeks before. Its now on 51945.
Oil filter manky and almost empty of oil despite still being bloody heavy. Nice wee fram piece of crap (only my opinion)

Yep. Agree with that. Like to do mine every 6 months as its my daily driver/workhorse/toolbox.

Did a full oil change last Christmas, engine, gearbox, diffs etc..
The engine was instantly quieter on tickover and happier in general. Can't say I noticed any change in the gearbox / transmission tbh but I hadn't had it all that long.
Engine oil due again next month and I've used standard stuff up till now. Any definitive word on super whizz bang oil then? :)

I recon you are right then, previous owner was done by the stealers. Those Little Fram filters are ok if changed often [every 5000]
Are we allowed to name and shame on this forum?

I used to work with an ex vw car mech and some of the things he told me would have put me off a dealer for life!
