"Oh pooh"

Was the thought that went through my mind earlier as I put the Disco up on the ramps to do the sedimentor. I noticed a large patch of oil on the floor, nowt strange there you might say.

But this is the biggest patch from our car we've seen yet and it only took a couple of hours to form :(

Looking at the vertical front of the sump is like looking at paint where rust is forming underneath

I've noticed it before but just thought it was a collection of crap covered in oil but now it seems that this is where it is seeping from

Could this be as simple as just swapping the sump out, it seems easy enough, a fair few bolts holding it up, take them out and remove then put new one in it's place??

I've looked at the book of Haynes and that says you can remove the sump but need to lift the car using the chasis as the wheels and steering bars need to drop with the suspension enough to pull the sump out.

Alright

Can anyone advise on removing the sump? I have a replacement coming in the post.

Has anyone done this before?

I have my jack, axle stands and wooden blocks so I can it it high off the floor to give enough room for the wheels to drop on the springs.

Cheers

Not too much to worry about when removing. Replace sump plug as you will find that not all the oil will come out when you drain it.

When replacing do up the bolts in a diagonal opposite fashion working around the sump so as not to distort it. A smear of RTV sealant on the gasket is also not a bad idea.

Well it wasn't bad, I was lucky and had the help of SWMBO brother in law and his pit :p

  • Warmed the engine up
  • emptied the oil
  • undid the steering damper at one end
I was worried about this bit wondering how hard it would be to pull the damper back and out of place but there's not much force in it at all
  • undid the track rod at both ends and removed
I couldn't get away with just undoing it on one end as there is a 'harmonizing damper???' there also
  • Loosened the 22 bolts holding the sump on a few mm in case the sump dropped at any point
  • using a sharp pick pulled out as much of the instant gasket sealing the old sump joint as I could
  • pulled, swore at, tugged, wept, swore some more, hammered and pulled again until the sump came off
  • Fed it back towards the rear of the car to remove it with all the grace of a ****ed elephant and dropped the sump into the pit
  • put instant gasket around the top of the new sump, waiting for a few minutes before offering it up
  • put a couple fo bolts in to hold it in place
  • put rest of bolts in and tighten up
  • fill the oil
  • Ran the engine
  • re checked the oil
Jobs a good un
