Hi Folks, TD5 Auto 2001 thats started to smoke on start up and only until warm. This happened before and it was the head gasket (prone to going Im told).BUT all was going well with the car until I topped up my oil, I think i may have overfilled it. I have checked dip stick this morning but it was too dark to see, it looked like the oil was between the two markers near the top one but when i turned the stick over it was higher than the top marker.

Could it be burning excess oil off? the smoke is blue ish, and I dont seem to be losing any water, but will keep checking.

Heart is in my mouth as I just can do without the head going, £££££

Cheers for any feed back

If the smoke is blue, it's burning oil, which would not lead me to believe it's a head gasket case.

Check again in the daylight to confirm where the oil level is on the stick. If it's only just over the high level (ie 1 or 2 mm) it should be alright, if it's a lot over the top level you should be draining some out.

Cheers and good luck

Dave

OK checked oil today, its not over full as first thought, 1 mm below top notch on dip stick, water level in expansion tank has dropped about an inch, but surely for the amount of blue smoke im getting its not water/head gasket??, It only smokes on start up from both cold (loads) and when hot still loads but not as much from when cold.No smoke when hot an accelerating hard or when she kicks down.

Is it piston rings gone, dodgy diesel (but have just put £25 in and not improved)

Is it worth dropping oil and changing filter and adding new oil?

As before any help much appreciated

OK friend has suggested glow plugs are fooooked, whats your opinions please, oh and are they easy to do ?TD5 DISCO

If your glowplugs were shot, the normal symptoms would be grey/black smoke on start-up, longer cranking times on start-up. I.e., glowplugs only impact on start-up.

I don't think your main problem is tired glowplugs.

Blue smoke is burning oil, this could be piston-ring related, could be valve guides.

Cheers for that, have ordered and will fit new glow plugs anyway as i bet after 85K miles they are still on the first set, i have not had them done and i have had it 4 yrs.

it wouldnt even turn over today just a click, have fast charged battery and got terrible screach noise Starter motor ?? but it eventually started.

it just gets worse !!

Hi Folks, TD5 Auto 2001 thats started to smoke on start up and only until warm.
On my 200TDi it was a loose crankshaft pulley, causing the injector timing to be out. Solved by welding the pulley back on...! Don't know enough about the TD5 to say whether that's a possible, but someone else might!
