The only thing you've got to watch out for on some of those snake oil
solutions is that they can make the lips of the seals go brittle.

It's OK, got a phone call at teatime to say tomorrow has been cancelled
because the lorry that was in bits at the dealers on Friday is still in
bits.

It's still a pretend Range Rover. Anything after series 2 is.

If it's a pipe that's gone, there are only three on the system, one of
which is low pressure from the reservoir to the pump. Then you have one
from the pump to the steering box and another completing the circuit
back from the box to the reservoir. I'd suggest you cost up replacing
the two high pressure ones and have a go at fitting them yourself.

As it happens, I removed the entire PAS off a 1980 Rangey yesterday,
ready to put on Ebay...

I might have missed a similar comment amongst all the dross that this
query has attracted but if you're serious about resolving the problem
you will have to get a little closer than you appear to have done so far!

Wash everything off and observe. Eliminate the two hoses and the
transfer tube first. If OK, bite the bullet and go for a recon. box as
you've seemingly already made up your mind that you are not going to
attempt any repairs.

I'm pretty sure that it's one of the hoses. I don't have the time to
repair it myself (got a house to fix up and three bikes in the garage
that are restorations in progress) so I've got to get it recovered to a
local specialist...

Well, got a call from the local specialist who's had the car for a few
days - bottom seal on the steering box gone, presumably due to some
potentially hamfisted replacement of other steering parts.

That'll be recon box then as it isn't in that great a condition. I
asked them to look at the other annoyances I've got with the car, let's
see what they come back with...

I have the nasty feeling that the overall bill will be a tad on the
high side...
