Odd, troubling noise

My Defender is a Td5, 110 CSW. From around the region where the ignition key goes in, it seems, I hear a noise somewhere between a tapping and a ticking, but irregular. (I don´t hear it all the time and when I do hear it, it's uneven... that is to say it's not regular, llke the ticking of a clock.) At first I thought it was the keys swinging and tapping against the plastic surface (some of them are on a slightly long chain), but it isn´t that.

Please, any ideas or suggestions?

dont know from your explination, do you hear the noise when you go trough a bump in the road? had a similar thing a while ago, it was the steering linkadge that was warn and made a taping noise in the steering coloum

have you looked at the electrics on the iginition? it could be lose wires and shorting!
