this problem has been noted before but no solution was posted, anyway when starting my 300 tdi p reg auto disco particularly when cold it always starts first go but on releasing the key from the cranking position it stops, sometimes takes three or four goes to get it running, other method is to keep the key in the cranking position and rev the engine then it will keep running, in all other respects engine and vehicle are fine its done 120000 plus miles. any info on this much appreciated.

regards engineer:) :)

You will wreck your starter doing that.

Could also be your lift pump, and by cranking it and opening the throttle wide your injection pump is just about managing to pull the diesel up and the run it.

Do you know how to check your lift pump? 120000miles thats about the same milage for a lift pump in a few 300tdi's I have seen.

thanks for the replies but i think your missing the point the engine fires and runs immediatly, fuel filter is regularly changed in service it just wount keep running once it is though goes perfectly incidently this is an auto with the injector pump controlled by an ecu

Had this with my 90 in the new year, the problem was the fuel lines were leaking at the filter, so it would start first time on the fuel in the injector pump and along the pipe from the filter, then it would die as the air came through, and took a bit of cranking to get it to start again.

When I got round to sorting it all it needed was some PTFE tape on one of the couplings.
