odb cable

Hello...
Can anyone tell me which odb cable i have to use for my freelander TD4 mod 2003.
Are there any useful softwares and where can i find the plug in my car ?
I was used to use vag com for my old VW but no idea with the freelander

the diagnostic socket on my td4 2003 is in the footwell tucked up behind the centre console on a metal bracket.

it is ODB 2 complient but only fer generic fault codes [EMS] for alarms and ABS ,AIR BAGS , ONLY THE LR Diagnostic software. . . . .always check fault code readers will work with the gaylander [some cannot read it]

you can use the obd function in vag com......

I was about to start a new thread when I found this one - sounds as though Ming might have the the answer to my question .....

I have a 1997 Disco 1 (North American Specification) and I recently bought a Bluetooth OBD module (means I can sit in my living room with the Disco parked outside and fiddle about - with the ODB, that is)

Anyway, the hardware works great but the software that came with (and other free downloads I've tried) is pretty limited. I can read and reset common fault codes but that's about it.

What I actually need to do right now is to put the alarm ECU into learn mode so I can program a new remote control. Apparently the alarm fitted to NAS Discoveries is different from the domestic ones and you can't use the procedure with the bonnet switch and turning the ignition on and off etc. to do this - it must be done via the Serial Communications Line to the alarm ECU.

So I have two questions: (1) Can anyone recommend some (reasonably priced) software which will work with my generic ODB module and a PC and (2) Am I likely to be able to access my alarm ECU with it ?

Bin goin through my old archives ,and be dammed if i can find it, fink it wur Computer Active did a right up on lap top software that wer odb11 compliant and they tested it on a td4 GAYLANDER wiff good results. . . .i will keep lookin fer yer or will ask Porky wen he gets home [he is studying Nuclear fizzicks ] he's er furra bread

Reet Porky found it [eeze er furra bread] its called a Gendan [ELM323] ITS EOBD Compatible . . . . .you pay for the download [pc software] and come with a parallel port connection [in yer motor to usb [on yer phooter] all instructions , but its best used with a lap top. . . . .go to there web site for more in depth details or read the computer active review at www.computeractive. . . . . . .i typed in cars [in search] and found it in a list. . . . . . . . . . .hope this helps

I have a Vag-Com Cable, 16 pin to usb type.

What Pc/Mac software could I use to get this cable working on my TD4?

Alternatively I still have a switchable ADS/OBD interface unit I bought for my BMW, now if I bought another Vag-Com cable, this time 16 pin male one end & 16 pin female the other.

What software could I use to diagnose on the TD4?

That could prove to be very costly

I presume there are no programs like the BMW's Easy DIS diagnostic platform running via vmware using the OBD interface & serial cable?

I'm new to this vehicle type & just doing some groundwork into putting together a DIY diagnostic package for myself.

If 'Hawkeye' diagnostic handheld is the best option that covers my initial request - to have the ability to read and have access to all available modules in the TD4 and have the diagnostic/clearing codes/possibly recoding functions.

Then that's that!

Or If the alternative method as "mrey68" has suggested using scantools, or easyobdII or the Elm/Gendan option is just as good then that will be better financially.

Any more ideas, what does everyone else use ?

I have an L Series Diesel and I just want to read basic engine fault codes using my laptop whats the cheapest software I can use and would this cable work?

Majority of odbii hand held scanners (or pc versions) should be able to read faults codes from Freelanders. I prefer the hand held ones. You don't need to have a pc available, or with your car which could be nicked when yer fixing it. The only option available as a home user, to do near everything, is the hawkeye. I've got one. It can access all computers, like security, auto gearbox, abs, and main computer.

Agree with above, Hawkeye is the obvious choice if you want almost full functionality for the Freelander. The original reference to Vag Com from 18 months ago was a reference to the full Vag Com (now VCDS) licenced software which has OBD2/EOBD function for other (than VAG) vehicles and not cheap ebay interface cables.

That's the cable I have, I initially bought it for my VW Golf, then had an idea about using it joined to a 20 pin cable I had for my BMW.

In the end I didn't use it on either car, the Golf got sold, I realized from the advice I received was to buy the proper diagnostic for the BMW - the ADS/OBD unit.

However I still have the same VAG Cable & like yourself, am interested in possibly using it initially on the TD4 to give myself some idea of its capability - however limited.

I do know as you probably do too, that if you have you VAG cable connected to your laptop - make sure you are not connected to the internet or try to upgrade the VAG software from their servers - as these eBay cables are Chinese copies, which will be rendered unusable by the VAG website.
