I'm flamin pi**ed off I have spent the last couple of days trying to get these flippin things NUTSERTS/RIVNUTS/DROP IN ANCHORS..... (there are so many bloody names for them) installed so I can get my side steps sorted.

I have looked on the internet on how to do it but I still can't do it!!!!

If anyone has ever done them and has got any tips I would very much appreciate it.

Sorry I am having a moan but these things are pi**ing me off now.

Hi Sean unfortunately I haven't, I have only seen the made ones which are basically a bolt and some washers and a nut. I have tried this way but still no joy, I haven't seen any special tools for installing them.

Thanks Sean that will be a great help, without sounding too lame how do you actually use it? I couldn't master the bolt washers and nut as Treworgey 90 has mentioned.

if you can use a rivet gun you can use a rivnut gun - find that ebay item number and there's a diagram which should help explain how it works

and if you still can't do it bring it round to mine and i'll do them for you and dust yer leather armrest while i am at it - fer oh lets say £300

Thanks Sean that is very much appreciated. Yes I have used a rivet gun so if it works on the same principle there should be no problem. Despite Treworgey 90 thinking otherwise...........hehehehe :p

Make sure your holes are the right size. If they are to big they will never grip and you end up with something half fitted with rattling bolts that you cant tighten nor undo - trust me, I have used thousands of these things. They need to be a "tap" fit into the hole before you squash them. I used to use an air powered gun for fitting them, and then put a couple of TIG weld flashes just to stop them turning, and even then if you get a bit of crud on the thread when undoing it picks up and they let go their grip.

A big thank you to Treworgey 90 he kindly sent me the details on how to install these rivnuts with the bolt and nuts and washer.

I managed to get them installed exactly how it was explained and now my side steps are properly fixed on. :D

Thank you :D :D

Fer the benefit of others.....

You need 2 nuts, 1 bolt and 1 washer that fit the thread of the rivnut. Put a clearance drill through 1 nut so that it has no thread and slides up and down the bolt.
Push the rivnut into the hole, wind the threaded nut and washer onto the bolt, then slide the drilled nut onto the bolt under them, then screw the bolt into the rivnut. It should go in far enough that the thread of the bolt is fully engaged with the thread of the rivnut. Tighten the threaded nut / washer down onto the drilled nut and wind it up tight, so that the bolt tries to pull the rivnut out of the hole, but it can't because the drilled nut is holding it in. The rivnut will then deform inside the hollow section as designed.
Loosen the threaded nut and test to see if the rivnut is tight - if not, wind it up a bit more.

Piece of ****.
