Now what? Starts, Runs, But has no Power! Please Help!

Hi, been trying to work out these problems with my 2006 Td5 Defender.....After replacing the battery; changing the oil and both filters; replacing the fuel injector loom....I still have no power in 1 and/or 2 gear. It feels as though I can't get the engine to rev higher than say a few thousand RPM's. Just drove it around the block and could barely make it up the hill in 1st gear!

I have checked the ecu red plug and there's no oil in it. I've reset the fuel pump button in the bulkhead, still the same.

2 things that are not right: 1- the glow light comes on, Sometimes. Other times it doesn't come on. And 2- I don't hear my fuel pump turning on when I turn the ignition key.

I want to change the fuel filter because I know it's due, but I'm concerned that if the fuel pump is not working I won't be able to prime the new filter! Am I right or should I just change it anyhow?

Anyone's input hear would be greatly appreciated! Thank you....:confused::(
 
I'm not sure glow plugs make a hell of a difference. My Merc had defective glow plugs and the garage told me that they made the emissions better at start up and they do very little else on modern diesel engines. They never caused an issue. Besides if it starts that wont be the problem.

If it was the pump is probably wouldn't start either. You will know if it works by starting it on vapours. It should make a right racket. Not really recommended but I know from recent experience. Mine is a 2006 TD5 and I don't hear the pump either (when I have fuel).

Do you get revs in other gears? Does it run ok or is it lumpy?

Have you looked at the obvious such as throttle settings? Change the air as well as the fuel filter.

Haven't got it out of second, I live up a hill and I'm nervous bringing it down. It starts and runs ok otherwise. But now I just realize there's a squeaky skreech when I turn it off!

Throttle setting? :eek: not sure how? Checked the air filter and it was a mess, cleaned it out and put it back, will order another. I'm going to change the fuel filter now and see what that does.

On a different note, I just noticed a little bit of smoke coming from what looks like, below the back of the rocker cover. :confused:
 
TD5 is a bit high tech for me. The last time I did any real work on a LR was on my 200 Tdi. There must be some way of regulating throttle settings though.

Also try running it without the filter and see if that helps. However if it starts from cold I am guessing that is not the real problem.

Have you got a leaky exhaust manifold?
 
Head gasket possibly. Check your coolant.

Either that or you have a bad oil leak. Is the turbo working properly? That might explain poor performance.
 
You said you've changed the oil - please check the oil capacity for a TD5, as I'm not sure what it should be.

In earlier engines it's about 6.8 litres with a new oil filter. As 5 US quarts is < 5 litres, I don't believe this would even register on the dip stick.

The fuel capacity for the td5 is 7.2 liters, I had a friend pick up 5 quarts for me thinking I would be able to get to the station and top it off.... I figured the stick may read low, but it's dry
 
May be a long shot but my friend has the same problem with his TD5, sometimes it can be the ignition barrel (not gonna be this on yours) other times a wire comes off a relay under (i think) his drives seat? Check them. However his is a 2000 TD5 so a little older and you can hear his fuel pump when you turn the key but it wouldnt start, just keep going and going and going. Again a long shot but his is poor and wont throttle on at all for a few minutes until it decides it wants to play.

I'll check for disconnected wires, again :( The not turning over part happened last week also, after push starting it it went away. :confused: thanks for your input. Where I am in costa rica, the LR dealer or even a good LR mechanic is over 5 hours away:eek: so I need to do whatever I can before resorting to that... Unfortunately, not being all that mechanically inclined these forums are all that I got.....

In what way was the air filter a mess? Oil? Water? mushed up? pictures would have been good.

If you're getting something into the air system then I'd strip it all out, from the air inlet pipe, through the filter, the intercooler and right to the turbo, remove _every_ pipe .. then clean them out thoroughly and check for 'stuff' inside the pipes. Also remove the intercooler and clean it out, it's likely full of crap!

Older Discos (I dunno if TD5 also suffered) suffered from de-lamination of the air inlet pipes, they were wound and pieces could de-laminate causing a flap to appear under pressure, giving very, very similar symptoms of no power and no revs, but fine when idling!
 
Have you check the fuel pressure, because these td5s need to see about 4bar to run properly. Could be your fuel pump.

Should have posted a pic, sorry! What I meant was the air filter was full of debris: sand, dust, small leaves and even a twig! So I cleaned it out the best I could and put the filter back in.

Today I will start cleaning out all the pipes and let you know.....thank you for the input!

Waiting for a pressure gauge to get here, but in the meantime....have a question maybe you can help. After changing the fuel filter, as I stated above the truck turns over but no longer starts. When I turn the key I can hear a click from, what sounds like the fuel pump relay, but don't hear anything from the pump itself. Could this mean that there is power getting to the fuel pump but the pump is faulty. I also checked the new fuel filter and there wasn't any fuel in it?
Tried to run the purge, by following the directions found on this site, but I never here the fuel pump kick on. :confused:

you need to put a multi meter on the wiring at the pump, if there is voltage going into the pump but the pump isnt working you need a new pump,
