... but it will be a Christmas present for my son and I'm pretty sure he won't look in the Freelander forum!

At the moment his Defender stationwagon has a spare wheel carrier that fixes to the offside rear and the back door, every time he closes the door the weight of the wheel is shaking the door and it's dropping. He would like a carrier that just fixes the rear and not the door. Can someone who knows about these things point me in the right direction? Am I right in thinking it is a 'swing away' carrier that is needed?

Sorry it's the wrong forum, but like I said it's a christmas present, he doesn't think he's getting a present this year after having cash early for a trip to the USA.

Is a good idea, my spare is actually on the door, makes it heavy and the hinges aren't happy.

The one on there seems to me to be more supported by the door than the carrier, it's doing the same as yours - stressing the hinges. The door does need a rebuild ideally but I thought if I could get him a better spare wheel carrier and probably new door hinges it will do for now. Ideally I'd like to remove the rear door, strip it and rebuild it as well but a landy with no door won't last long by me, even with a real heavy duty dog guard in it!

A lot of the slitty trucks have them as standard, my next door neighbour's Land Cruiser has 1.

I don't think they have a separate latch mechanism like that though. They are supported by the truck's wing, but clipped to the door and swing away when the door is opened. You can unclip them from the door to swing them away independantly.
