after changing head gasket it wouldn't fire on start up, but a good tow start sorted it. she wouldn't idle without opening throttle, and emitted blue through to grey smoke for a few minutes of revving till it warmed up. idled fine and drove fine. kept it idling for half hr or so to get some charge back in battery, turned off and started no problems 3/4 times. went to bed happy! then this morning, same again - wouldn't fire. just spins over very freely. all rockers are moving fine, no valves are down with rockers up etc. any other checks?

Leak off pipes, lift pump:)

Check compression, I once had a Ford Escort with this problem, the engine was worn out

Head gaskets come in varying thicknesses - is it possible that you fitted a thicker gasket than the one you replaced? If so it would lower the compression ratio and possibly cause your problem.

Possibly sticky rings s good run getting oil hot should prove it and if problems disappear that is the answer, if not report back
