Hi all having an issue with starting changed starter motor after a failed start and squeĺing starter motor which was on way out ignition turns and cranking but car wont tic over or start but after a good few attempts with a fully charged battery the air filter box exploding open!! anyone experience this or can explain what's causing issue its like its not ignighting fuel, could it be ignition switch
Just as we've had 4 months free of no repairs
Freelander 1.8 k series

Hi,

If there is a smell of fuel when you try to start, and starter is running, you have certaintly the plugs or the cap distributor that are dead.

Regards

Seems like fuel not coming through which made me feel like it was ignition switch plenty fuel in tank haven't managed to check plugs yet starter working thanks will try a bit more investigating will try checking cap distributer

Hi all changed starter motor cleaned plugs fuel coming through checked ignition switch and coils car cranking over sparking but seem to have a backfire going into inlet manifold from spark plug 1 car wont fire up anyone experienced this and any ideas could it be that the timing has slipped since rebuild in sept or something else
Just 1 more summer longing for with top off

Oh just been doing more investigating plugs in correct sequence took timing belt cover off tried turning over looks like like timing belt has been jumping and very loose when cranking what would cause it to become so loose everything is out timing wise ..........

Incorrectly fitted tensioner is the likely cause.
Could it cause any engine damage ie pistons hitting valves or is it just a case of stripping down aligning crank pully and cam pulleys re fit timing belt and trying to start new belt was fitted with new water pump with engine rebuild and head gasket done only September had a few months repair free what's my options guys I've done so much to this car and love it but ..

Definitely could, it's an interference engine.

At this stage you've nothing to loose by trying that.
Will give it a try and if not after owning her for 3 years

Hi so had a bit time today to strip down and investigate if I have any engine damage and I have a question before I dive into head I can't seem to turn engine by hand using the crankshaft bolt to align crankshaft it's only turning 180 degrees left to right, right to left and can't align with tdc.spark plugs out Cams are lined up but is there a way to re aline without taking head off am I thinking that bent valves are preventing it from fully turning or is there a way to turn cams to try and re align with crank shaft moving freely any ideas or will head have to come off to inspect to see what damage has happened in order to re align everything again from start

With the cams lined up, there will be at least 2 valves open.

To turn the crankshaft, you'll need to turn the cams to close the offending valves, which will allow you to turn the crankshaft until the next valve stops it. You'll probably need to do this several times to get the crank into the safe position.
Once the crankshaft is lined up on it's mark, then re-align the cams.

Tried aimlessly to free up crankshaft and to no evail could get it to line up or budge so set about stripping head down and fearing the worst that the valves were stopping crankshaft turning and suprise suprise I've found the problem 4 broken valve stems ...........Down but not out never give up .....
