Hello All
My Disco 2 TD5 was running fine-I turned off the engine for two minutes and it would not start again.
I get all dash lights and can hear the pump working but when I turn the key nothing happens-dead!
Leave the car to cool down and it starts first click then when it warms up-same again-non starter. When it's running I have the 3 amigos on AND the parking brake light! I've had the 3 amigos a lot lately but they always re set on turnoff but not since this problem began and the brake light is a new problem.
I fitted new injector harness and cleaned out ECU four months ago so don't think it could be oiled up already.
Any advice on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

hi 23griff, sounds interesting this could be multitude of things, 3 amigos could be 1 of four abs sensors or the shuttle valves, this problem is caused by the cracking of a plastic cover wrapping a small circuit board that reads the viscosity of the brake fluid. Remedy is a new and pump or a mod you can do to the pump wiring bypassing the circuit board. Abs hill descent and tc all work perfectly following this procedure takes about an hour. Non starting well....... If the pumps running then it should fire but check your battery when the engine is off, make sure you are getting more than 11.5 volts as these cars are voltage sensitive if they fall below this voltage everything spins over fine but no start. If your car is auto turn the key and if the sport & manual light flash as well as two on the gear selector at the same time you are down on voltage. It maybe that after a while the battery is up to 12 v so it will start.
fwar that was a mouthful good luck pal

Hi Nizbang
thanks for that info - I have checked the battery and it seems good-getting decent readings on a multimeter both off/running and on crank. The car is an auto but I dont get the flashing lights-had them before so know that one. It`s a mystery !

I`ll have a look at that mod and replacing abs sensors - is there a way to test the sensors?

HI @23griff

what is the Red LED on the dash doing? when ti starts and when it will not start?.

Also can you get someone local with diagnostics? especially for the 3 amigos, trying to fix it without diagnostics can get expensive and frustrating.

When you say you have switched off for a few minutes , did you lock and unlock , or did the car sit ? , if you can get it to do it again, then try locking and unlocking the the doors using the fob, Then see if it restarts straight away.

OH, and TD5 must see at least 10.5 volts when the car is cranking.

Cheers

Hi Neilly
Thank you for the info - I have tried locking and unlocking but it makes no difference - the only way it will start again is to leave it seemingly to cool down - then it starts straight away.

Today I started it - first click no probs - and left it running until it got hot - temp needle in the centre - but didn`t drive it anywhere. It started first click every time I switched it off.I then took it for a drive and when I came back and turned it off it would not strat again-let it cool down and it started.

It`s driving me nuts haha.

Is it worth doing the shuttle valve mod anyway? At least if the Amigos are still on after that I can be almost certain it`s a abs sensor.Would diagnostics pin point which sensor it may be and is the fix then a new hub or can just the sensor be replaced?

Maybe a silly thing, and not sure why it would happen, like you have, but do you hear the starter solenoid tick when it will not start?

Or is it completely quiet?

A common problem with D2's is the starter solenoid connectors failing, although heat is not something I have ever seen influence it. Also the lucar connector ( spade) on the starter solenoid come loose or get dirty and cause intermittent issues.

Cheers

There is no click Neilly - it`s completely dead - all dash lights on but nothing on key turn!

I`ll give all the contacts a clean and general look over

I would see if you get 12V at the starter lucar connector when this happens next. Maybe it is a relay getting hot and failing.

No 12V at starter take it back from there, do you have the electrical drawings?

Cheers

No mate - I`m just a DIY er - I dont think I`d know how to read them even if I did have them.
I could test for voltage at starter but think it would be a trip to the auto electricians after that :)

Owning any LR product is a learning curve,.................a very , very steep learning curve. Something like this is a good way to start learning, even if you do end up taking it to the Sparky, at least you could have him explain and then begin to understand the electrical diagrams.

If you have rave , have a shufti at the wiring diagram , it is not that complicated for the basics.

Cheers
