:confused2:  Hi all, been reading your posts and tech info pages very helpful I have a 89 "90 Def" with a 200tdi power plant in had it for just over a year it's a pickup and loads of fun to drive . Just had it mot'd and it breezed it two rear brake pipes. Any ways I have one querie since mot my steering is making a hell of a racket when turning changed the belt and a couple of ball joints but to no avail so had it running and my nephew turning the wheel so as I could pinpoint noise , I felt for vibrations and tracked it back to the steering pump is this a common fault or symptom or should I be looking for something else . Cheers in advance G

the pumps don't last forever, if your still on the original one it's done well - change the fluid that usually quieten things down a bit - are you sure the drive belt is tight enough ?

Could also be air in the system - the pump whines a bit when there is air in it.

This can be drawn in from small leaks in the system that may not leak oil but let air in.

Although, its probably the pump.
