Noisy Fuel Pump

Can anyone help

My'99 Series 2 TD5 has started to make a whining noise from inside the off-side rear wheel arch

Is this the fuel pump on it's way out?

I have also noticed that previously when you turned the ignition on you heard the pump for about 5 secs and then it went quiet, now the noise just carries on

I thought that the pump running const was normal! well i hope it is!!

From the Defender manual (i'm sure they are the same)

"the fuel pump is a self priming, wet type, two stage pump, which is emersed in the tank. it operates at all times when the ignition is in position II. if the engine is not started, then the ECM will 'time out' after 3 minutes and de-energise the fuel pump relay"

Thanks for your help, it does make a racket, even a squeal but then it quietens down after a minute or two

like a squeeling noise?!

if so do a quick search on google. think that might be a sign of the pump showing early signs of death
