Noisy Defender.

My 2003 Defender Tdi has developed a high pitched whine between 80-100kmh which seems to be coming from the engine compartment area. I live in a fairly remote region of Victoria in Australia, so unfortunately there are no Landrover specialists under 130kms away. All other mechanics see Landrovers as a money making machine, wether they get the diagnosis correct or not.
Anyway, i've had the bearings in the front diff replaced, which had no effect other than reduce my bank balance by AU$750. Now they're suggesting the noise is coming from the gearbox. I took a friend for a drive & he seems to think it may be coming from the Turbo. Any suggestions?........Scotty.

Try dipping the clutch and letting it freewheel cos that will tell you if it's transmission related. I wouldn't have thought it would be the turbo or engine as this is revolution dependant not speed

Thanks Marmaduke. I'll try that. I'm in a large city at present, so there's not many places I can legally get up to 80kmh or more. I've got a 1200km drive coming up next week, so I should be able check out your idea then......Scotty.

No worries, have you had the actual wheel bearings checked as well as the diff bearings?
