Mentioned this in what have you done to your Freelander today but thought I'd start a thread for it.

I have a strange metallic knock or tap noise when changing gear. It seems to be on the drivers side and to the rear of the driving position...

Replaced all 3 diff mounts which I thought had cured it.... But it hasn't, although. It doesn't seem to do it as often

It seems to do it most when changing from 1st to second and second to third but not always. It is not a harsh bang, more of a metallic tap.... Hard to describe really.........

Might sound a bit daft but last time I had a noise like this was many years ago in a mk2 escort. After months of looking it turned out to be play in one of the lower door hinges........ A bit of adjustment on door striker plate fixed it..

Could this kind of noise be caused by vcu support bearings?? Whatever it is, it seems to have been reduced by the new diff mounts

Cheers

CHRIS

I didn't even see you had another thread here. Whoops! Let us know what you find when you try and move that rear subframe, near the drivers side bolt with a bar. The noise should be easy to hear if you were to drive in first gear on full lock whilst speeding up and slowing down. The noise will be the 2 bits of metal rubbing together as the metal flexes

No noise at all when turning

It is a quite loud knock / tap mostly when changing from 1st to second and second to third. If I am extra smooth with the gear changes I can stop it happening.

Just a bit confused as to why it isn't doing it as much since diff mounts changed

Also doesn't seem to do it with gear changes at lower revs

Thanks zdomz

They are on the list to check.

I think the noise is coming from behind me but I know from past experience that the noise isn't always coming from where you think it is!!!!

It's really annoying me now but shouldn't complain...... The car had lots of knocks etc when I got it and each time I've changed a part it has got rid of one of them.... Just this one to identify now!!!!

Another thought..... Check the exhaust rubbers as well.

When the engine mounts are knackered the engine can kick the exhaust up against the body...

Thanks again zdomz

To be honest if I was asked to describe this noise, say ing exhaust hitting floor would be best description.... Kind of a hollow bang

This may sound rediculous but doors do fall off Frelanders you know...

Try pulling away with the driver's door open and see if the sound goes away!

I get clicks as I accellerate and decelerate - but if I open the door they don't occur - must be something to do with the chassis flexing around the door. You could try other doors as well, but on my '99 its the drivers door.

Well I think I've finally found the source of my noise.

I think it's the subframe mount.

From underneath I can get a screwdriver between the subframe and body and there is movement.

Anyone got a how to on the repair??

Thanks

Chris

Yes yore right

Wellded a plate onto the bottom of the rail and around the tube the bolt passes through. Top of rail where captive nut is was like new
