Hi folks having problems with my 1997 2.5 dse in as when i start from cold i get a noise from im nearly sure its the engine at 2100 revs and up to about 3000 revs. When stood still with bonnet open and someone operating the accelerator i cant hear the noise from engine. The noise dissapears once ive done about 20 to 25 miles. The only way i can describe the noise is its very similar to a run big end but it dissapears when revs above 3000 so i was thinking if it was to do with oil pressure and either a cam or cranckshaft noise it would get worse the warmer it gets not better.Could it be a hydraulic tappet and its building up the pressure the warmer it gets??There are no misfires or anything else it is running sweet apart from this noise.Would appreciate any help on this.

I have something similar with my DSE, when I floor it around 2500-3000rpm there is a ticking sound, but I'm pretty sure it is coming from the interior trim somewhere, outside the vehicle the engine sounds sweet. I don't think they got the NVH quite right with the BMW M51 engine in the P38.

Probably not worth stripping the engine for (camshaft, crankshaft) if its something you can live with...

Actually I'm talking bollocks, driving it home today it doesn't make a sound like a big end knock, it's just a bit of trim rattle.

Are you sure it sounds like a big end? it would be a fairly nasty metalic knock, you would almost feel it through the floor of the car, oil pressure would also suffer I would think you would see the oil light flicker once the engine was hot (after a good long stonking) it certinaly wouldn't get better once hot!

Try running the engine for a few miniutes with the serp belt off, (only for a few mins though as the water pump will not be running) see if the noise stops.

Take the cam cover off and look at the lobes and top of the buckets, could be a bucket has stuck and is not spining and the lobe has worn in a slot.

It would sugest it's a lazy / weak hydraulic follower, cheap and simple enough to replace, though you would need to remove the cam, replace the sprocket bolt and check and ajust the FIP timing to swap it out.
