Car has just started to make horrible noises from the gearbox in N and all the way through the box from about 1200rpm. Level seems ok, car pulls ok on the flat but on occasion will not change from 1st going uphill until the car is on a level surface.

Any thoughts or ideas as to what it might be i.e. gearbox filter/torque converter.

Cheers

Did you check the transmission fluid level???

Yep, as i say the level is ok.

I thought it might be the gearbox filter restricting the uptake of fluid, hence the refusal to change up on an incline, however the noise (which sounds metallic and an accompanying rattle) is present in neutral.

All pointing to the gearbox/torque converter - just want to be sure before i get my wallet out

Checked the box level this morning again from cold, the fluid in bang on the correct level, nice and clean and red.

The 'orrible noise is definitely from the box/converter area and not the engine. There is a vibration from about 1200rpm (even in neutral) which is what makes me think it is the torque converter.

That said, all the up changes are taking longer and car seems 'sluggish' in general.

I'd consider the flexi drive plate being cracked (the thing the torque converter bolts to). Not sure if you can inspect it through the access hole at the bottom of the bellhousing...?

mine is manual but still worth checking the bolts, mine were loose and this cured my vibration.

Noise in neutral sounds like flex plate shouldn't affect gear changes tho , the noise in neutral does it go quiet as you select a gear then return louder ??
