No heater fan

Guys and gals, my 200tdi's heater fan doesnt work. The AC recirc fan does, but in any non-ac position the heater fan doesnt move. The fuse is OK, and the lights dim on the dash slighltly when i turn the fan control to the fastest speed, but it doesnt turn.

I could do with heat at this time of year, if nothing else but to demist the windscreen.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to get the fan out without removing the whole dash per the Haynes manual?
