No headlights! Help

Evening all

Driving back from my long journey today. Head nights on for a couple of hours. Turned off the vehicle, and started it up. Heard an electrical whining noise behind the dash, which goes off sometimes.

The lights work intermittent, i went over a bump and they came back on, but the whining noise went off behind the dash when dipped beam comes back on.

Odd fault and didnt know what to search for. Fuses are fine and its intermittent, very hit and miss.

It could be mate. It just didnt seem like the switch, it sounded like something behind the instrument panel at fault.

One i first switch my headlight on, i get the same electrical whine in the same area. This time it was constant, when the headlights weren't working
 
Is there anything else affective - it could be something so simple as a lose wire or poor earth. No water gotten in to the system.

I recommend you getting your voltmeter out and testing the circuit mate. Best to be same than sorry.

Could be a relax buzzing i guess Carl. Not totally sure tbh mate.

And landy fox other than the temp gauge reading hot (when engine not) then theres no issues at all.

If you have the 'dim-dip' system installed then the dim-dip relay is behind the dash and does cause issues.
 
Thanks guys. Where would i start looking for a bad earth, battery clamp is fine, and ive also cleaned the earth strap from the battery, to the transfer box i think it is.

I'll have to look into the dim dip relay, i think i may have had dim dip, but not normal dip.

I had to hold main beam on for the remaining half hour of the journey
 
There's an earth to the bulkhead just behind the dash. I also had an issue with what appeared to be a make shift earth just to the right of the dash binnicle, attached to the nut holding on the fixed windscree hinge. I also follow the earth wire from you interior lamp.

You could always just test it by rigging up a temporary test earth direct from the switch to the battery or clean metal. :)
 
Thanks Guys, I'll give your suggestions a try. I think its going to be difficult finding the problem as its intermittent, the headlights may work today, but later on may not.

I had the same issue.

The 110 failed outside the Natural History museum with 9 of us in it and a 240 mile trip ahead of us! The AA replaced the light switch and got me back on the road, the next day the lights went again and I replaced the relay behind the dash. the lights went again a few weeks later and when I went to replace the , relay below the main fuse box near the gear lever, I found one had a burnt/corroded terminal. I cleaned it up best I could and refitted. that cured it!!!!

I seem to have the exact same chilli pepper.

I removed the the dim dip relay the weekend, inspected the main switch (nothing obvious) and i thought that had solved it.

However, went out tonight, flicked main beam on and when i flicked it off. I lost dipped beam again.

Decided to look back at this thread, and inspect behind in the fusebox. Had a look at one of the yellow relays after a second prompt.

Here's what i found

The burnt connector, is a blue wire. The relay appears to have seen better days too. Looks like its burnt from an electrical fault.

Is this my problem? Or has something caused this?
