Sod's Law that when you really need it it will pack-in!!

Lovely cold morning, turn on the heater fan and..........nothing, zip, nada!!

Actually, I lie, there is a rather strange smell of the electrical kind. The fan has always squeaked but was gradually getting worse. I am guessing that either the motor has seized altogether or the resistor has packed up.

Any ideas out there would be much appreciated.

Also, has anyone come across a 'ticking' speedo? I am assuming it is the speedo 'cos it varies with the speed of the car and definitely comes from behind the clocks.

Ta much.

That's my first move, but I still think there is a burning type smell when I put the fan on, or maybe I'm just paranoid? Haven't tried it since just in case.

Ticking Speedo . . .

I have this in my '95 V8i, and i can only assume that it is the speedo. I can't seem to get to the bottom of what it is exactly, but, don't know about yours, but on mine it gets quieter as the engine warms up???

This question has appeared a few times and no-one seems able to answer it - anyone got any ideas???

re: Ticking speedo...

Disconnect the speedo cable from the transmission and get a mate to turn it in the chuck of a cordless drill, this way you only get the single noise of a drill to filter out and no road noise..?? may help identify if this is the cause of the noise?

I've never tried this on a disco, but used this method on an old allegro once to find out why the speedo was not working...turned out to be the sender unit in the gearbox.
