hi i am new to the site as i have a big problem with my car,it has very little brakes, when you start the engine the 3 warning lights come on(abs,tc,handbrake warning light) and they dont go out even when you go over 40mph then when you hit the brake peddle it goes right to the floor and slowly stops,i have disconnected the battery for 5 mins and the lights went out and the brakes worked fine then with in a min they were back on.my mate has plugged it into a diagnostics machine and the only fault it showed was the hand brake switch, can anyone help me thnaks andy

no the brakes worked fine it was not untill he plugged it into the machine and the handbrake switch came up that they just stopped working again,im not that stupid.and yes thecomputer went thought every little thing possible and that was it

So what's this mean then

no i dont but the man has tryed differnt things, then they work for like 5 mins then go all spongey, but dont worry i only go like 700yds aroung the block and its not like the brakes dont work atall they do a bit but not like they should,i could be wrong but it sounds like an electrical fault somewhere to make all the lights come on like they do the go off for about 5 mins

brake fluid was the first thing i checked of course, and for the second quoteif you had the problem you would understand what i mean, trust me its not as simple as it sounds and i posted this looking for any answers people might know or if there is any p38 mechanics that know theses well or have had this problem before

i know that but there is still some brakes but not what there should be,anyway i would like any answers for people that might have had this problem before,

The lights are on to warn you, you have a problem. Low brake fluid, low pressure in accumulator, they should all go off as or before the vehicle reaches 7 mph. 40 mph and they stay on should be telling you something. Get someone who knows what they are doing look at it. Obviously you don't and the bloke who looked at it for you not a lot more. Sort it before you kill yourself or someone else.

i know what the lights are for and the man that does it works for a main dealer garage and knows a lot but when you put a machine on it and it says the only fault is the switch and th computer in the car dosent say nothing just the warning lights but as i said they will go off and the brakes will be fine, the car had been sitting for 3 days in my drive waiting for the machine to be put on it and when i got in it to move it to his garage every thing was fine then i took it out came back done the machine test and it all went again, and im not stupid enoughto put any ones life in danger and like i said its not that easy to explin either

It does sound like a problem with the hydraulics. You need to get this professionally checked - too dangerous.

finaly some talking about the problem thanks,he has said that hes doing 1 last check and said he will have to book it in at the gargae where he works where they have more people and more machines, just thought it was worth a try on here though

sounds like master cylinder fault,or a leak somewhere, check all corners for fluid leaks, failing that,DON'T DRIVE IT,not until you have definately located the fault, these vehicles weigh a lot,and really take some stopping,i would not dare take it out of my drive with dodgy brakes, can't see it being electrical, unless your vehicle is powered by batteries,(first landrover milk float?)
seek help not from a money taking garage tho,you must have a mate who has some idea?
