The last 2 times driving dublin to belfast with long big hills on M1(the clinton highway) losing from cruise @70 down to 45 foot down revs go 2700 to 3200 no change in pace just slowing on the hill. the gear box sounds smooth and quiet with 75/90 on the flat, (though sometime when i go to start its light is in reverse and place in N hey presto)). could it be my turbo or gearbox or age of the horses where is it losing power ? at what point or place ? 1998 2.5 dse. thanks. seany

is the g/box changing down, have you used the kickdown??

doesn't seem to be any kickdown anymore, there was up untill a few months ago, didn't use it much but now there is none just more revs with an empty roar of the diesel engine. come to think of it , I had the pump in the fuel tank replaced few monthes ago and cant remember it since then cause i was happy just knowing i wasnt going to cut out, what do think ? thanks. seany

If the revs go from 2700 to 3200 when you put your foot down, it sounds to me as if it is kicking down but the engine is just losing power.:(:(

Have you changed the fuel filter recently? Especially since you have had a new in tank pump fitted, could just be the filter is full of **** from the pump change and the engine is being starved of fuel when it has to work hard.:(:(:(

Start with the simple things like the filter, or for example you could manually drop a gear and see if the engine pulls OK.

One other thing, you do not say what the mileage is on your car, but if it is very high mileage, and it is an engine power problem, it could be the throttle positon sensor, but thats a long shot, they do not give a lot of trouble on the P38.:D

Check the vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold (underneath the manifold just above the oil filter) to the manifold pressure sensor (mounted on the fuel filter bracket.) If the hose is split or detached the sensor doesn't work and it limits fuel delivery, I get the same symptoms when it's popped off before.

Check for split in the turbo hoses.

As above, check the hoses. Also a an often overlooked serice item is the intercooler. I bet you nor any previous owner has cleaned it out ?
Take some time and a few gallons of parafin and you will see the difference.

thanks for all your sugestions so far i'll keep you postd after the weekend but i dont know where the gear box atf atf level is. seany
