No 1 Piston TDC

Hi all i am changing my Vacuum pump in the morning,Disco 1 300 tdi Auto.
Can any one give me tips on how to get to TDC without the proper locking pins?.

You don't need to.

No timing involved changing the vacuum pump.

Haynes says No 1 has to be at TDC,something to do with vacuum?.Thought iwas gonna be able to just un-do bolts and swap new for old?

You might have to push up the new pump a bit harder, that's all, it ain't timed.

Thanks as ever Soloby,so i should just be able to un bolt the old pump and just swap them over?

Pull out your No 1 injector and stick a long screwdriver in the hole. When it stops being pushed back out you're near enough TDC for what you want.

when you come to fit new one if you look at cam you will see it has 2 lobes ,just turn engine over till lobes are up/down that will make vac pump easier to fit

Well i ended up just taking the old pump off and swapping them without doing anything to the cylidner!.
I have yo say though that problem of crappy brakes probably wasn't helped by the fact that 4 of the 6 bolts holding it on were only done up finger tight!
