Nice one Land Rover designers AND Haynes people

So there I am this evening, gets home from work to start off the work I have to do this weekend on the car.

Drain the oil, drain the coolant (after alot of swearing cos I couldn't get the lower rad hose off, then when I did SPLOSH, everywhere including my eye).

Time to remove the rad

• Top hose... comes off fine
• Small hose to expansion tank... Meh!
• Top oil cooler hose.. EASY
• Bottom oil cooler hose..... GODAMNITPEICEIF****INGCRAPBASTIDBLOODYTHINGTW@

I think you can take it from the above that I had a little problem. Ended up with the adjustable spanner on it and the handle of the tirfor being used for leverage and it was still hard. Got it off though

Then The Haynes book of lies says "Remove fan cowl"...

Oh AYE. "Remove fan cowl", it's THAT easy is it?? Another bag of swear words and some scraped knuckles later and that came out..

All went back together easy enough though after using some more swear words and then the final offence.

Who thought of using a plastic bolt to seal the thermostat?? A plastic bolt... ****ers!!!! <-- That means I've knackered it, need a new bolt for it

It went in all skewiff and got cross threaded. So I was fecked off then and forced it in.. so I could turn the engine over.

Engine was running fine but don't want to take it for a run until I've replaced the bolt in the top of the thermostat.

Can't wait till tomorrow, get the rest of the work done

did you remove fan to get fan cowling out? if you didnt you must be a wizard because that got me scratching me ead for ages, one 32mm fan spanner later and it was out lol

i know its wrong to laugh but when youve been through same thing you know exactly how it feels

I've modified my fan cowl (cut some chunks out of it) so that it can be easily removed in seconds. I've even got wing-nuts securing it at the top.
Haven't got a viscous fan anyway - binned that years ago.

Replace the plastic plugs with brass from landy spares type people or plumbing supplies or with house radiator drain plugs....standard go-to procedure on any newly acquired disco innit

Once you've disconected all the plumbing from the rad/intercooler you can lift it out in one lump with the cowl attached.

hehehe... as I said to you on the phone, resort to brute force...
if it fails, take the bonnet off and jump on the engine while swearing loads... that's what I did yesterday.. lol

Yeah the fan was out. I've fitted it back in the other week when I discovered all of the fins on the old rad had gone on holiday somewhere.

The only wingnut around here was the one replacing the rad yesterday and fettling with the bloody car today..

Oh well, oil, oil filter, new rad, new coolant, new lift pump, completley taken the EGR off instead of just the blanking plate in the EGR fixture. Had a good look around and all seems in good nick

Still have a couple of jobs to do:

Check/adjust valve clearances
Check around the suspension
Wheels off and a good old clean up and bleed of the brakes
Replace the fuel return pipe (started this earlier only to find that the bloody things needs a nut and olive.... )

P.S. Anyone want to donate a snorkel in my direction?? Or some 3" steel pipe?
