Hi all,

Don't know if everyone is aware of this but if you use the
News.Individual.NET server from the 1st April it will no longer be free.

See http://news.individual.net/ for more details.

Could be an early April fool joke??

-----------

Update on the Discovery problem. Still having the same trouble with the
compression blowback into the turbo (oil contamination) Maybe, just
maybe, might have found the cause after many hours messing about. The
valve (tappet) oil seals have gone. They no lnoger stay put where they
should be, but travel up and down the shaft of the valve! Hoping to get
this done on Saturday and will update then.

All the best all

It's called the thin end of the wedge.

From the discussion in comp.sys.acor.misc it would seem not :-(

well, are you prepared to invest in the required amount of bandwidth,
processing power and storage to operate a free netnews service, all out of
the goodness of your heart, and then maintain it 24/7 (pretty much - I've
very rarely seen significant outages from cis.dfn, they do a pretty good job
IMHO), also OOTGOYH?

I know I wouldn't. I'm grateful that they've done it for so long, and
provided the fees don't get to be more'n about a pint a month, I'll keep
with 'em if the service stays good.

Are there any decent free alternatives?

Can't say i'd object too much to paying since this news feed seems
pretty good!

Nothing is 'free', especially running an nntp service (I know).

Even taking porn (otherwise known as 'binaries') out, the feed is
pretty hefty and doesn't maintain itself. I'd hazard a rough guess
that few here have enough bandwidth to take every non-binary group.

As a rough guide, to run a full (yes, with binaries) nntp service
you'll need at least three Gigalinks, very reliable peering and a lot
of somewhat expensive hardware (start by making at least four full
height racks available, then fill them with the best kit there is).

NIN, Supernews and Giganews (the latter wot I'm usin' at present) will
survive by subs and ISP bulk buying - not goodwill, I'm afraid.

I'd support NIN, both for it's heritage in offering 'free' news to
all, but also as a non-binary service, wot nntp really should be :)
