hi all, i'm new to landrovers. We have just got a 1995(m) disco 300 tdi. So far it hasn't been a good start as the rear trailing arm snapped off the axle. My questions are: how many miles should i be getting to £10 of diesel. Second thing is it crunches going from first to second, and can be a pig when down shifting from 5th-4th-3rd,as in it doesn't always want to go into gear. Apart from that its all good. She has had a new rear panel fitted and two new front inner wings before we bought her. Last question is what else should i look out for, like to fix things asoon as they happen or even before they ghet chance to brake lol.
Many thanks in advance
alex

we took it from near blackpool where i live to dumfries and it used £60 in diesel for a 224 mile round trip. When doing the school run we get around 40 miles to £10 of diesel. The one thing i have noticed is that my friends 300 turbo seems alot louder than ours infact can't hear mine till about 3400 rpm's is this normal. Sorry for all the questions

40-45 miles on a tenner. i'll second #2 with the gearbox oil idea. Cheap and easy to do. If the EGR hasn't been blanked off you could do this, and i would give the intercooler a clean out also. might get a it more power and economy!

cool thanks for that a job for the weekend then lol. I've noticed that at low revs it does struggle alittle to climb throught the rev range. Many thanks to the replys that i have got. i will have a bash and post my results.

no its not it quite tight not like a stick in a sock lol. have been told it might be the sncrowmesh please forgive the spelling,no my strong point lol. causing the grinding as it only happens at high revs, unless you double clutch.

There's loads of posts on here about 2nd gear disco crunchiness - it's typical of these boxes. You'll find a gearbox oil change helps a bit (mine was really bad but oil change seemed to improve it a fair amount) but it's something you'll get used to eventually!

On my 200tdi I get 400-420 miles from a full brimmed tank (about £60-70)

wow i have problems then as mine quite heavy on derv. i think i'm gonna check for leaks and give it a service as well as cleaning the ic out

You should be getting better than 224 miles on a run with 60 quid (that's range rover territory). I get 190+ on 30 quid. Reckon it might want a service to start with.

i also get about 190 miles to 30 quid around town! i have no egr but do have the pump tweaked for better grunt low down. i have had a couple of 300tdi discos and they have all been roughly the same for mpg, they were also all manual.as for the crunchy gearbox you will soon learn that these gearboxes cannot be rushed and will soon master it so it doesnt crunch!

your very close to the max rpm limit of the 300tdi there ! im not supprised your only getting 224 miles to 60 quid and your risking blowing the engine !

i never take mine over 3100 rpm which is close to 75/80mph and a full tank of diesel, about 80 quid gets me around 430 miles knocking about town, i reckon on a run its closer to 550 miles to the tank ?

hi yes i did make a slight error on the rpm thing so used to petrol. What i thought was 3400 rpm's wasn't more like 2100 rpms doh. lol

granted mine's a 200tdi but i see at least 160-170 miles to 30 quid & thats on short journeys , work & back , shopping , school run type affair , I reckon its definately a good start to do the box & transfer oils and see if that improves the gear change , it did on mine mind you its still a bit tight & notchy but thats a lt77 box which i believe is not as good as the one on the 300's

i'm wondering if i have a leak althou i haven't noticed any derv smells nor seen any. as it stands at the moment it has got me £25 to do 75 miles. i need to find a solution and quck my wallet doesn't like it lol. Somebody i know has said about using bio diesel can these be run on it

I wonder if the previous owner has turned the fuel pump up on your disco. If it was me, i would start from the tank and check back for leaks, check the sedimentor, fuel filter area etc. Are your tyre pressures correct, air filter clean. You might get a bit better eonomy when you blank off the egr and clean out the intercooler. You might have to flush the intercooler out a few time to get it spot on, and give the out side a good clean also.
All these little things should add up.

While i remember, Another idea would be to swap the restrictive down pipe for a decat one. 20 quid off ebay. Should let the thing breathe a bit better. It's on my to do list.

i've a service planned for the weekend, tyre pressures where alittle low so have put them at 55 psi. I intend on changing all filters however i've tapped out the old air filter as it was full and now i can hear the turbo lol. As for the egr where is it located on the 300. I'm used to replacing them on vauxhall only lol. total greenhorn i know but also where is the sedimentor, what is svo. last question how do i check whether the pump has been turned up and how do i reset it if need be
