hello people,

i'm new to the whole land rover scene and am yet to own one, im looking to buy a discovery 200 or 300 tdi, which is better and why? what should i be looking to pay for a good condition motor.

Also anything to look for when taking a look?

Another question.... any negative points with owning a discovery?

thanks.

Depends how much you want to spend and if you can do most of any work yourself. Personally I'd get a 300tdi but I own a 200tdi. I think they're much the same but the 300tdi engine is quieter and a more refined.

Listen for loud banging / clunking noises when pulling away and changing gear - this is likely to indicate wear in the transmission which can be expensive to fix.

The biggest killer on older discos is rust though - check the boot floor especially at the back. Ideally you'd want to lift the boot carpet and have a proper look. Also check the sills and footwells. Have a look at the brake pipes as well, make sure they ain't about to rust through.

My disco is an ugly, slow, old shed but it can go anywhere and do anything I want it to. There's just something about the disco, personally I think it's a great vehicle. The only thing it can't do well is fit in small parking spaces.

Hope that helps! Also it's worth searching the forum as many people have asked similar questions before.

And check the rear seatbelt mounting points as the arches tend to rot if not cared for. The sills especially the ends aswell. Whereabouts are you as if your local I would be more than happy to come along to any viewings ;)

Not really, so long as you go into it with your eyes wide open and performance expectations suitable low.

They are NOT cars!!!!

Go for a 300, with a manual gearbox and a manual injection pump, then De-EGR and DE-cat imediately, the performance gains are significant and these two mods will cost you about £50

Cheers and good luck - rust is the thing, rust is the thing, rust is the thing, rust is the thing, rust is the thing,

Dave

there are plenty of second hand ones out there. make sure you look them over carefully. Rust is the killer. Take your time and look at many!

when you go to have a look, take a torch and wear your scruffs, get underneath and look for rust.

parts are cheap and everything is replaceable with either new parts, aftermarket copy parts or ebay second hand parts , but you dont want to have to replace the chassis, they RUST. bubbling on the paintwork is not an issue as the panels dont rust.

did anyone mention to look for rust?

Firstly drive one just to make sure its what you really want,if you do then buy one on condition rather than age (don't automaticly expect a younger vehicle to have less rust).rust is the biggest worry but theres so many out there if you look hard enough you'll find a good one eventually. One last thing, don't expect the fuel economy to be car like which is something a lot of first time buyers don't take into account.
